Longing for Security

Before the Thanksgiving holiday, we broke into groups with the teens to find out what they were thankful for and how they were celebrating their holiday. Often when breaking into groups, we spend a good chunk of time calming down the squirming that naturally comes with the territory of being a teenager.

I had a group of 9th graders. At the beginning of our group time, they laughed and poked fun of each other. I guess the insecurity of facing your peers in a circled up group brings this out in teenage boys!

Before I ended the group time, I asked them if I could pray for them about anything. It started out with joking, but then one boy said, "You can pray that black people will stop killing black people." When he said those open and honest words, I knew it was one of those doors that only God could open.

I began to ask questions about how they felt about this and if they experienced fear in this area. They all said, "Yes, especially if we go to other areas of the city. You never know, we could get shot. We feel safer walking in groups, rather than alone." I told them that I understood how they felt. After living in John DeShields in East St. Louis for over four years, there were times I experienced fear. But, I don't think I will ever fully know how they feel.

I had the truth of God's Word constantly in my face about His protection and that gave me a HUGE sense of security. They are just beginning to learn to rely on God for protection. Their culture and the way they were raised tell them to fight for their own, rely on yourself and your people for protection, rely on weapons and bullying, but this often proves to end in disaster and failure.

We all bowed our heads and I prayed over them for God to protect and surround them with His angels, as well as lead and order their steps in the way of wisdom. We left with hugs and I could tell that a bond was formed between these boys and myself.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, because I know without your support and prayers, we wouldn't be able to have these conversations. The outreaches we have, the food we serve, the prizes we give away, these are all simply a platform for God to use in order to bring about these Divine moments. The donations you give, provide these outreaches for the teens. THANK YOU so much!

Maybe you can identify with these teenagers. All of us long for security in some form, whether it's physical safety, emotional or financial security.

I pray that this verse forms the upcoming Christmas season for you and that you find daily rest in the security of God.

Isaiah 33:5 (The Message)
God keeps your days stable and secure- salvation, wisdom, and knowledge in surplus...

I'm praising and thanking God that He has connected us together!

Giving in Honor

of a Loved One

for Christmas

Christmas is coming up and we understand that people often like to give to charities in honor of a friend or loved one. If you are interested in this opportunity, below are some areas that you can give towards.

Receiving Gifts Receiving Their Stockings Last Year

$10- provides a lunch for three young men. Our Lunch Outreach is a welcoming environment away from the streets. These guys come to receive a home cooked hot meal and acceptance from caring volunteers who show them the LOVE of Jesus.

$30- provides a night of recreation for five young people. This is a time for teens to get out of their harsh environment and enjoy being a kid. Caring adults spend quality time with them playing sports and creating art activities. They receive a hot meal and attendance prizes in the safety of an indoor gym.

$50- provides Christmas gifts for five teenagers at our annual Christmas party. We create a fun and festive atmosphere with Christmas activities. This annual party is one that the kids remember and talk about year after year.

$100- provides Christmas gifts for ten young men. These guys have come to enjoy the holiday gatherings we set up for them. There's something about Christmas that melts the hardest of hearts.

In the memo of your check or secure on-line giving, please specify which area you are giving towards.
