Great Link!
OK, so when thinking about connection, I had to go to Brene Brown's famous clip, The Power of Vulnerability. If' you haven't seen it, please check it out- and if you have, watch it again and get inspired to reach out to others: (20:20)

"The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers & cities; but to know someone who thinks & feels with us, & who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden."

Reviews
"There was a need in an organization that I am involved in for a presentation on dealing with conflict and stress in the workplace. The group gave her glowing reviews and some comments mentioned were - "A great start to my day!", "Kerry kept the session lively and interactive." , and "She presented information that is directly applicable to my job!" -Greater Monadnock SHRM, Program Committee |

Greetings!

Happy Spring! While spring has been slow to come in New England this year, the warm weather is finally upon us, and I love how everyone seems to come out of winter hibernation with smiles and energy to reconnect with one another. "Hey, how are you? It's been a while...." I notice my own desire to get out and see people, to stop and chat with my neighbors as they clean up the yard, to feel a part of the web of community. And so I offer this month's reflection on connection. What relationships do I want to nurture? How can I foster a deeper network of support? What's true for you?
Warmly,
Kerry

Networking vs Networks of Support
A Distinction
In business, we often hear how important it is to network and have a lot of contacts to move us ahead in our careers. Yet having a rolodex (or should I say contact database) filled with business cards isn't the same as having people in your life with whom you can truly be yourself. This is one of the main reasons why I founded the Women's Leadership Circles of Vermont program. It serves as a way for women leaders to develop a professional network of support in their own community.
There are numerous articles and books written about the importance for leaders in having connection (one of my favorites is Harvard Business Review: Discovering your Authentic Leadership) and the ability to be vulnerable and supported. Yet often the business world focuses only on goals and outcomes, and undervalues the importance of connection to our emotional and physical well-being. We need people in our lives to provide acceptance, advice, perspective, and to just be there when we need them. These networks of support for effective leaders take many forms and may include: a spouse or significant other, family, work colleagues, close friends, mentors, and communities- (e.g. church organization, sports team, professional network, volunteer organization, etc.)
However, relationships don't develop on their own, and they take nurturing. So as you begin to plant your spring seeds and plants, I invite you to consider what connections you want to give a little extra care to, as well. See below for some ways to do that.

Reflection Exercise
Moving from Theory to Action
To support you in deepening your network of support, please consider journaling on the following questions.
1. What relationships do you currently have, and how would you assess the healthiness of those connections?
2. What relationships do you want to strengthen, and how would you like to do that?
3. What kind of relationships would you like to have more of? (See examples above).
4. What is your next action based on this exercise?

Book Review
The Circle Way: A Leader in Every Chair
Christina Baldwin & Ann Linnea
This is the book I give to each Women's Leadership Circle at the conclusion of their six-month program with me. It is a fantastic guide to building connections by creating meaningful circle conversations both at work and in one's personal life.
In particular, I appreciate how this book provides a solid structure and methodology for creating circles in a professional setting. Through this approach, it is possible to create more open, meaningful conversations with leadership teams and other organizational groups that increases collaboration, group cohesion, resulting in greater impact. A straightforward book with vivid examples, I highly recommend it for those interested in bringing more depth and connection to their group and team relationships.
