The Quickest Way to Stay Informed

Thank You from the EFCA West Staff
Each year the staff of EFCA West is able to travel to pastor clusters, meet with individual pastors and staff, plan and execute events that gather the churches together, help churches through difficult seasons and generally be available to serve the churches.  The EFCA West staff does not take for granted the churches and individuals who contribute financially to make these ministries possible.  For those who contribute regularly, thank you.  Your faithfulness helps us to strengthen churches throughout the district.
STYORYLINE: Local Church Pastor and Chaplain for the L.A. Dodgers
In a recent issue of Biola News, Biola University featured Brandon Cash, one of the Pastor-Elders of Oceanside Christian Fellowship (EFC) of El Segundo, CA. Brandon serves as the Chaplain for the L.A. Dodgers.  This was a role that Brandon had not pursued but has been a great ministry opportunity for him since 2010.  Read When God Calls You to Be a Chaplain for the Dodgers for more insight into this unique ministry.
Trek7 Comes to Los Angeles
TREK7
Previously, TREK7 has provided overseas opportunities, but this year EFCA is offering a TREK7 experience in Los Angeles, June 20- August 5.

TREK7 is a seven-week mission opportunity for college students. The participants live in community and learn together from urban EFCA pastors and ministries in the area. They also have the opportunity to earn college credit for their participation.

Los Angeles is one of the most ethnically diverse cities with one of the highest levels of income disparity in the nation.  The city is home to people from more than 140 countries speaking 224 different identified languages, making it a place to "reach the world next door."

Experience local ministry and learn from a myriad of leaders, from emerging church planters to those with well-developed ministries established in the communities they serve. Do life with multilingual and multi-ethnic faith communities who are passionate about bringing hope, justice, restoration, and gospel transformation to Los Angeles.  Spend seven weeks in the work God is doing in the city and leave on mission for life.

Learn more about Trek7 LA or apply for Trek7 LA.
TREK7: Berlin
Berlin is also one of the Trek7 opportunities.  Mike Edwards who oversees the Berlin initiative writes:  "Get a taste of what life as a Christian in a post-Christian European city is like, while exploring this multicultural urban center. You may spend time ministering to refugee children by playing soccer with them. Help refurbish a ship on the river Spree that's used for student outreach. Spend time loving on children through a vacation Bible school, or assist in a city outreach project at the historic Tempelhof airport, all while demonstrating the love of Christ alongside other staff and partners in the city. Watch Leandra's experience and learn more about Berlin|TREK7 or  apply for this amazing opportunity.  Come join us in Berlin! Application deadline April 15, 2016.

Something to Talk About:  Sharpening the Saw
"Author Stephen Covey introduced me to the life principle of sharpening the saw in his best-selling book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.  He uses the metaphor of sharpening the saw to illustrate the need for people to continually renew themselves in mind, body, soul and spirit in order to continue to be effective in their lives.  People do not auto-sharpen - to be sharp we must intentionally do something to sharpen ourselves.  We don't stay sharp through continuous work - we stay sharp by intentionally pausing from our tasks to sharpen the saw."  To read the entire article by Bob Osborne, click here.
Meet the EFCA West Staff
Steve Highfill, Regional Director of EFCA West, takes some time this month to talk about the importance of ministry in the context of team and the great joy in serving as part of the EFCA West team.  Steve concludes his article In Accord with a Cord-Doing Life as a Team with these words, "...we join you in praying that God would surprise you by surrounding you with partners and teammates who not only share your commitment to serve Jesus faithfully, but to do it in a way that manifests the creative miracle of God's complex, interactive, and inter-dependent family.
Choices Have Consequences:  Thinking through Gentrification
night-lights-city.jpg In an article on Ministry Matters, Dave Barnhart talks about the issues of Gentrification and the Church.  "More than 80 percent of the United States' population lives in urban areas...For decades, inner-city residents used their resilience, ingenuity and resourcefulness to create new businesses, raise families and make art in places that wealth had fled...Churches and church planters, like other business owners and nonprofits, can be agents of gentrification, unwittingly accelerating the displacement of their neighbors.
This article is a good first step to thinking through the issues.  "...being willing to talk about uncomfortable truths related to history, race, class, culture and economics is necessary for us to do good without also doing harm."
Seven Things Every Leader Needs to Quit Immediately
caution
Many times authors, bloggers and church consultants have lists of things leaders should be doing.  As a change of pace, Ron Edmondson recently highlighted Seven Things Every Leader Needs to Quit Immediately.
Called to Preach?
James Emery White addresses an issue that is awkward to discuss.
"
...why is it that so many people who want to preach, are preaching, or consider themselves gifted in preaching, aren't very good at it?
I know, that's impolite to say. To some, it's touching the third rail. But we all know it's true. Many people who want to preach, can't. Many who are, shouldn't. And many who consider themselves gifted, aren't."  Read Called to Preach.
Christian Persecution Reached Historic Levels in 2015
globe.jpg
According to a new report from the 2016 World Watch List from Open Doors, a persecution watchdog group, there has never been a more dangerous time in modern history to be a Christian. Open Doors says global Christian persecution has risen to "a level akin to ethnic cleansing."
