Dear Achilles Enthusiast!

Below are just a few brief blurbs and photos from our latest newsletter which covers some of the amazing events, accomplishments and triumphs from the past few months.

With marathons from coast to coast, exciting news from our chapters across the country AND around the world, and our 11th Annual Hope & Possibility 5 Miler in June, the past few months have been a very busy and amazing time for the Achilles family.

We hope you will enjoy and be inspired by the tremendous accomplishments of our athletes and the dedication and devotion of our volunteers.

Thank you for being a part of the Achilles family.

Go Achilles!

Dick TraumWhen Achilles began 30 years ago, we were so proud of our six members that we hoped one day to put on an annual race to showcase their talents. Several years later, as we grew nationally and internationally, we suggested a marathon around (and around!) Central Park to the former Parks Commissioner Henry Stern, who indicated that given our lack of experience in staging races, we should begin with an event in Prospect Park, Brooklyn.  Read more...

null Our Achilles-Boston chapter was dormant until the 2013 marathon was ended by horrible  explosions which killed three and injured more than 250 people. Donors who know the difference Achilles can make gave generously. We are particularly grateful for a grant from Newman's Own Foundation. We set up an advisory board, named directors, bought handcycles, and began twice weekly workouts in Revere, MA., a neighborhood north of the city. Mery Daniel, Boston marathon survivor, came to New York City to witness the Hope & Possibility 5-Mile Race and decided to make the switch "from spectator to participant," completing the 5-mile course in a handcycle....Read more...

L.A. Marathon
On March 17, 42 Achilles athletes including
several wounded servicemen from Balboa Naval Hospital participated in the 2013 L.A. Marathon. We enjoyed a St. Patrick's Day-themed pre-race celebration, during which Balboa recreation therapist Marla Knox presented Achilles staff with a plaque on behalf of patients at the hospital thanking us for our efforts in serving wounded veterans. We were very touched by the acknowledgment! Read more...

The Achilles Kids Weekend Program enjoyed a full season of running and fun! Seventeen
Achilles Kids All Stars participated in our Hope &
Possibility 5-miler, and despite the muggy weather, many of them had their best race times yet!  We are so proud of their commitment to Central Park training runs twice a month since February, their determination to reach the finish line and their contagious, positive attitudes. Read more...
