M&B News
Foothills Frenzy 50K
Jenny Stinson, M&B sales and marketing director, had a blast as the race director for the 5th Annual Foothills 50k Frenzy in Boise, Idaho. Here are Jenny's own words about the great experience this race was for her and others:
"Wow! What a spectacular day for the Foothills 50K Frenzy. I could write pages of individual stories about the terrific volunteers and the success of the amazing runners who came out for the race this year. Congratulations to EVERYONE who stood at that starting line. Whether the runners were out there for 4.5 hours or 10+ hours, every single one had a personal story of astounding perseverance, accomplishment, and courage. And the volunteers - not only did they spend 12+ hours helping - many of them stayed around at the finish line to share in their friends' successes. All of you who had anything to do with the Frenzy are the coolest people ever. You ALL made this event magical. THANK YOU all so much."

Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend
May 28-29, 2016
Ottawa, ON Canada
Many visitors to Ottawa are struck by how much Canada's capital city can feel like a small town. With quiet streets, plenty of beautiful green space, and residents with their typical Canadian politeness on full display, Ottawa seems like a city that's closer to 10,000 inhabitants rather than the 1,000,000 who call it home. It's exciting to watch this big small town transform every May as it welcomes 50,000 runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators for Canada's biggest running party: The Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. It may feel like a small town, but make no mistake--this is a big city race. Featuring a lineup of six amazing events, including an IAAF Silver Label Marathon and IAAF Gold Label 10K; Canada's largest running expo; a Celebration Stage with live music; and a beer garden hosted by the region's beloved craft brewery. It's a weekend with something for everyone, no matter if it's your first race or your twentieth. The premiere event of the weekend is the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon, Canada's biggest and fastest race, and its largest Boston qualifier. With its fast, flat course, the race regularly brings in elite runners from around the world. Men's marathon winner Yemane Tsegay of Ethiopia set a course and Canadian soil record with a time of 2:06:54 in 2014 and then went on to finish second at the Boston Marathon in 2015. The route itself offers the unique opportunity to see the city's sights and natural beauty all on foot, taking you by famous landmarks, through two provinces (Ontario and Quebec), and along the historic Rideau Canal. Outside the weekend running festivities, Ottawa offers a small-town feel with big-city attractions, including many of Canada's best museums and galleries, as well as top-notch shopping and dining, all centrally located. For travellers, Ottawa is easily accessible, only a 90-minute flight away from New York and Boston and a 3-hour drive from Syracuse, New York. Within reach for a perfect long-weekend running vacation. Mark May 28-29, 2016 on your calendar as the date of your small-town, big-city Canadian running adventure. And then get ready to #LoveEveryMoment in Canada's capital. For more information and online registration, visit the Run Ottawa website.

Subscriber of the Month: Angie Spencer
Subscriber Angie Spencer, along with her husband, Trevor, has been helping runners achieve their goals since 2010 through their website and podcast, Marathon Training Academy. Angie shares her running story with us below and her recent accomplishment of becoming an ultrarunner.
How long have you been running, and how many marathons have you completed? I started running off and on during high school but didn't get serious about long distance until 2007 when I decided to train for my first marathon. At the time I didn't have any friends who ran or know anyone who'd completed a marathon. I struggled my way through training and finished the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, TN, in 2008 with a time of 4:10:15. Since that time I've completed 35 marathons, one 50K, one 40-miler and one 50-miler along with various shorter races. I'm working on completing a marathon in all 50 states and have 30 states completed.
What made you decide to take on an ultra?
I said that I would take on an ultra after qualifying for the Boston Marathon (which I ran in April of this year). I ran the Leadville Marathon this summer, and it was the toughest race I had done to date. I am a flatlander, so it was a huge challenge to run on trails at 10,000 to 13,185 feet of elevation. I finished in 7:11:07, which was my slowest marathon. Despite the outcome, conquering that marathon gave me a ton of confidence that the ultra distance was possible and that now was the time to do one. I went on to run a 40-mile road ultra in Idaho a week after the Leadville Marathon. Then one thing led to another and I signed up for my first 50-miler.
What was the toughest obstcale to overcome during the 50-miler? What was the most rewarding part of the experience? Overcoming the negative thoughts that begin to creep in when the body starts to hurt is always a tough obstacle. My lowest point was at mile 25 when various body parts were complaining loudly and I realized that I still had half the race to go. Two of the race highlights was running 2 miles with Dean Karnazes and making a new friend along the course, a woman named Shirley. She was running her first 50-miler to celebrate her 50th birthday, and we were able to finish strong together. That was an amazing moment.
Your podcast, Marathon Training Academy, is a favorite among runners. Tell us how your listeners inspire you, and what drives you to keep going and share your experience with others. I am very inspired by everyday people who work hard to take their running to the next level and achieve their goals. I've heard from hundreds of Marathon Training Academy listeners who have overcome so much and they're some of the most positive people in the world. It makes me grateful to be a small part in their running journey.
Thanks Angie, and congrats on your recent accomplishments! Listen to Angie and Trevor and learn more at their website marathontrainingacademy.com
