M&B at Resort to Rock 60K & 32K

August was a big month for M&B publisher Jan Seeley, right (of Champaign, I), as she made her first trip to Idaho to run a trail race in the Boise National Forest with M&B marketing director Jenny Stinson (of Boise, ID), left. Subscriber and friend Lori Ozment, center, another flatlander from Champaign, came with Jan to join in the fun. The inaugural Resort to Rock 60K & 32K was held at Bogus Basin Ski Resort on Aug 29. The cool temps and cloud cover added to the spectacular running experience. The elevation and ~ 3,300 feet of total climb in the 32K was a challenge for everyone.

Between the Lines:
Running for Time

Thinking about running an ultramarathon in the near future? In our September/October issue, author Phil McCarthy tells us the ins-and-outs of running a timed ultramarathon in his article "Running for Time." From food and nutrition to course info and bathroom breaks, he uses his personal experience of running over 90 ultramarathons to fill readers in on what they need to know when considering a timed ultra.

Phil's article includes descriptions of specific races he has enjoyed, and a breif history of how ultramarathons began. These events can vary in time from a six-hour race to a multiple day event. One multi-day race he recounts is the Sri Chinmoy, a six- or ten-day ultra in NYC each year. Ultrarunners follow a 1-mile loop to test their endurance, strength, and skill over an extended time period. The website link above describes more about this unique event, and the video below recaps the race from 2013. Click the image to be inspired!

Be sure to read Phil's entire article, our Editor's Choice for this month, on our website or in the September/October M&B.

Word on the Street

February 14, 2016
Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Looking for that ideal winter destination event?! As summer comes to an end, that is a question many runners will ask. An event that comes to mind is the Fort Lauderdale A1A Marathon & Half Marathon. For many years, the "A1A," as it is called, was a favorite for local runners in the South Florida area. That all changed back in 2010 when Fort Lauderdale won the annual M&B magazine contest for Best Medal in North America.  Since that award, the little locals' secret got out, with out-of-town destination runners now making up half of the runner field of 6,500 participants. It also deserves mention that Fort Lauderdale did not rest on its laurels after winning Best Medal in 2010. They have followed that achievement up with back-to-back victories in 2013 & 2014! Three Number 1 finishes in the past 5 years--not too shabby!

The Fort Lauderdale team has been hard at work finalizing the 2016 medal. Each year the medal design changes, so the design team has to go back to the drawing board for a creative and unique idea. The 2016 medal will feature three designs in one, including a sand dollar, Mahi Mahi, and Loggerhead turtle fastened together with metal loops. The Loggerhead turtle piece will be a locket, revealing two interior designs as the shell opens and closes (see photo, right).

One of the most common questions the race organizers receive from non-Florida participants is "What does A1A stand for?" A1A is short, local-ese, for State Road A1A, the legendary oceanfront road that lines the east coast of Florida from Key West all the way up to Jacksonville. Most of the course is run on A1A, offering miles of unobstructed ocean views. Needless to say, the course is fast, flat, and at sea level. Elevation is not an issue at this event! The temperatures in Fort Lauderdale during February typically average 58-70 degrees with low humidity. Additionally, the event starts at 6 a.m., which helps to reduce the effect of any potential warmer weather. The bonus of the early start is the fabulous view of sunrise over the ocean that the runners are treated to.

Last but certainly not least is the postrace party! The finish area is staged in a large parking lot on the beach. The sounds of live local music and the sights of palm trees and the ocean will treat all finishers to a truly unique beach atmosphere. Plenty of free food, beer, and beverages are available.

Subscriber of the Month: Lynn Troost

This month's featured subscriber is near and dear to our hearts at M&B. Lynn Troost has known publisher Jan Seeley for many years and has helped at expos, races, and in the office since the very beginning! Her running experience is vast, and she shared a bit of her story with us.

When did you start running?
I started running way back in the mid-1970s through some activities and classes at the YMCA. My brother, already a runner, encouraged me to run my first race in Chicago, and I was hooked!

How many marathons and ultramarathons have you run?
I have run about 25 marathons and six ultras, all within the last 17 years.

Do you run with a group or by yourself?
I have a regular weekly group run, but I have always usually run alone, especially on long runs. When I moved to Champaign-Urbana in the summer of 1988, someone encouraged me to check out the Second Wind Running Club fun runs. Jan (M&B publisher) was one of the first people I met!

You volunteer at many races in our community. Tell us what that adds to your life.
I like to volunteer because it is a way to pay back those who organize the races I enjoy.  It is also fun to see new people getting involved in running, especially women and children.

What is your favorite distance to run?
I have always liked to run longer distances. Now that I am older and slower, ultras have become much more appealing, as it is ok to walk, take breaks, and talk to other runners.

Thank you Lynn, for sharing your running story with us, and for all of the work you do for M&B!
