Milestone Birthday for an M&B Favorite
Bonnie and M&B publisher Jan Seeley at this year's Pirate-themed Little Rock Marathon Expo

We want to wish Bonnie McElwee, one of M&B's biggest fans, a very happy 75th birthday!!

As an "unofficial" employee of M&B, Bonnie has helped for years at race expos and behind the scenes as needed. Her spunk and energy are not to be outdone--and she's run 54 marathons and 9 ultras to prove it! At 75 she shows no sign of slowing down, and she will celebrate this upcoming weekend by running the Grandma's Marathon.  Grandma's has always been a special race for her, as she ran her PR of 3:21 there in the 1990s. At that point she remembers thinking, "I hope I'm still running at 60." 15 years beyond that the "Energizer Bonnie" is still going strong!

If you see Bonnie at our expo booth or M&B dinner in Duluth, be sure to wish her a happy birthday! We couldn't be happier to have her as part of the M&B family. Thanks to Bonnie for all she does for M&B!

Word on the Street

Big Sur International Marathon
April 26, 2016
Monterey County, California

With unprecedented demand for entries, the Big Sur International Marathon will feature a new, lottery-style random drawing for its April 24, 2016 event.

This "bucket list" race, set along California's scenic Highway 1, is limited to 4,500 total marathon entrants, including all special divisions and categories such as Boston 2 Big Sur, Runner's World VIP, and various charity groups. The new registration plan provides a variety of entry options, which are outlined on the Big Sur Marathon website here. Sign-ups will be held  July 15-28 with Last Chance registration available in early August. Boston 2 Big Sur entrants can register for the B2B drawing in early October.

In addition to the full marathon, a variety of shorter distance races are held to offer runners and walkers an opportunity to experience the challenging course. These include a four-person marathon  relay, a 21-Miler, 10.6-Miler, and 9-Miler, and a 5K. Each of these distances will be available for registration on a first-come, first-served basis beginning September 1, 2015.

The Big Sur International Marathon has been named as one of the world's top destination marathons as well as a top "scenic" and top "challenging" marathon.
There are 16 hills along the course,  including the notable two-mile ascent to Hurricane Point at an elevation of 560 feet.

Iconic features of the race are the tuxedo-clad pianist playing a grand piano at the midway point, crossing the rainbow-arched Bixby Bridge, the famed strawberry station, and expansive vistas of the coastline along "the ragged edge of the Western World."

A popular visitor destination, Monterey County is home to major tourism attractions such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Pebble Beach Golf Links and the Seventeen Mile Drive, Carmel-by-
the-Sea, Fisherman's Wharf & Cannery Row, Big Sur, and activities such as wine tasting, hiking, biking, kayaking, and more. Hotels offer tourists and runners a variety of lodging options.

The non-profit Big Sur International Marathon (BSIM) organization also holds additional events, including the annual Half Marathon on Monterey Bay each November (this year's event is November 8) and Run in the Name of Love 5K and 2K in Carmel-by-the-Sea in June. The award-winning JUST RUN Youth Fitness Program is also part of BSIM's offerings.

For more information, including the 2016 registration procedures, go to www.bsim.org or contact info@bsim.org.

Subscriber of the Month: Eric Strand

Subscriber Eric Strand is training for his fourth Leadville Trail 100 Run this August, and he will be running the 4th Annual Grandma's Marathon Double this weekend in preparation.

How many years have you been running?

My first official race where I actually put a bib number on was Grandma's Marathon 2000 . . . so, about 16 years.

How many marathons and ultras have you completed?

I have lost track of the number of marathons, but believe it is over 50.  I've done 6 ultras.

Favorite post-race food to splurge on?

It's hard to beat a hot cheeseburger and a cold Lagunitas.

Biggest supporter?

My wife, Tami.  She thinks I'm "certifiable" but still goes to every race with me, including crewing for 24+ hours at Leadville.

Proudest running moment?

Not quitting at the 50-mile mark of the 2014 Leadville 100.  Bloody face, elbows, and knees and a cracked rib from several clumsy falls early on, but I was able to rally and finish.  It was a great lesson learned on the power of attitude and encouragement from friends, family, and other runners.  As Ken Chlouber correctly points out, "you are better than you think you are, you can do more than you think you can." (You can see his Leadville recap video here).

A trait that best describes you and "keeps you running."

Haha, apparently I'm an indestructible midpacker.

Eric takes some great video footage along the way at his races. Check out this awesome recap from his experience last year during the Grandma's Double that begins at 2:45am at the finish line in Duluth! Good luck this year, Eric!
