M&B Staffer "Runs" Aid Station

At M&B, we're not always running or directing races. Some of our time is spent volunteering. Last month, marketing director Jenny Stinson worked as the aid station captain for the Wilson Creek Frozen 50K Trail Runs in southwest Idaho. With a total crew of 9 helpers - including an ATV driver, a HAM radio operator, and the official race photographer - the team spent the day taking care of over 200 runners who ran on muddy (and not-so-frozen) trails this year. Click here for more information on the Wilson Creek Frozen 50K Trail Run.

Between the Lines:

Eat for the Long Run!

As a runner, you have likely experimented with many different fueling strategies during your training. Naomi Mead explores "Natural Fuels" in M&B's Jan/Feb issue and gives a great list of real foods to try as an alternative to highly-processed fueling products on the market today. Her list and ideas include accessible, easy-to-carry options that have been proven to be just as successful for runners while training as their highly marketed mass-produced counterparts.

Whether you are trying to avoid sugar, save money on products, or just want new ways to optimize your performance, real food fueling may do the trick. Read Naomi's article and use the tips below to stay fueled for the long run!

Stock up!

Stock your shelves with plenty of options! Give yourself choices that will likely be easiest for you to digest and that sound appealing while you're out running. Naomi's suggestions for foods such as honey, raisins, or applesauce pouches are simple and easy to carry. Clif Bar is even entering the mix next month with these portable optionsGive yourself a variety of foods to try on different days!

Be Prepared!

Just as you might set out your shoes and running clothes the night before a long run, get your fuel ready to go in advance. Portion your fuel into the serving size you'll need and pack it up so you can easily consume it on the run. Some items are pre-packaged, while others might take a bit more preparation (squeezable tubes for honey or homemade sports drink, or reusable bags for snacks).

Practice!

As with any fueling strategy, always practice your routine before race day. Avoid gastrointestinal issues by knowing in advance which foods work well for you and avoid low energy during a race by experimenting with a combination of food and drink. As Naomi reminds us, "running nutrition is very individual. Some foods you may get on well with, and others you may not." Make sure you go into race day knowing which ones will optimize your performance!

What's your favorite real-food fuel? We would love to hear our readers suggestions.

Here's a great homemade energy bar to try in the meantime!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Date Bars

Ingredients

2 cups peanuts(I used raw unsalted peanuts)

10-12 medjool dates

2-3 T water

1/4 cup chocolate chips

pinch sea salt

Instructions

In the food processor, blend the peanuts and salt into a powder.

Pit the dates and add them in as well.

If needed, slowly add a bit of water to help the mixture come together.

Once the dough is formed, line an 8×8 glass baking dish with parchment paper leaving enough room for some paper to stick out the sides.

Carefully spread the dough into the pan evenly. The dough will be very sticky and you may need to wet the spatula a bit.

Using the extra paper, pack the dough down until it is flat and even.

Place in the fridge to firm up, and store in the fridge for up to a week!

The U.S. Bank OC Marathon
May 3, 2015
Newport Beach, California

Come join us for the U.S. Bank OC Marathon's 11th annual weekend running festival! This event features the Marathon, OC Half Marathon, Wahoo's OC 5K, and the Kids Run the OC "Final Mile," presented by Nutrilite.

The U.S. Bank OC Marathon or Half Marathon is a perfect way to experience the beauty of Southern California. With runners from nearly all 50 states and 22 countries, we are gearing up for a weekend focused on giving our runners, their families, and the community a world-class running experience. Beginning in beautiful Newport Beach and running through four Orange County cities, the marathon and half marathon course presents runners with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and historic Pacific Coast Highway. Travel through the seaside village of Corona del Mar and past some of the nation's most expensive real estate. Run above pristine wetlands of Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve and through the Arts District and shopping Mecca of South Coast Plaza in the "Heart of the OC" and hear the supportive cheers of residents in the many diverse neighborhoods.

Upon your finish you will be greeted with great crowd support, a beautiful medal, a variety of food and drink, free massage, and tacos and beer garden at the "Ultimate Finish Line Festival" at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa. Last year's OC Ultimate Finish Line festival featured headlining artists Flock of Seagulls, Missing Persons, and Tommy Tutone. This is an event that you will not want to miss!

Subscriber of the Month:
Kim Ruple
M&B subscriber Kim began running for health, and as many of us have experienced, it turned into so much more. Read about her love of running, nature, and her progression into ultra-running with the help of her friends!

The Beginning

I first began running as a way to control my weight and de-stress after a long day as career women/mother/wife. It was an investment I made in myself so that I could be more for others. I strongly believe we all struggle with the many demands on us, whether placed there by others or ourselves. In order to be the best for others, we must first ensure we have been the best to ourselves, and running is a way a do this for me.

With the help of my friend Pat, I was able to complete my first marathon before my 40th birthday (a bucket list item). She introduced me to the Galloway Run/Walk method, which enabled me to train and NOT get hurt. Our first marathon was Rocket City in Huntsville, Alabama, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

My Favorite Race

I have run 58 marathons/ultras, and if I had to pick just one favorite, it would be the Kentucky Derby Marathon hosted just before the Kentucky Derby in May. It is a nice size marathon with good scenery and organization, but best of all you actually get to run around Churchill Downs with the announcer driving you faster as "they head around the bend to the straight away." As a "horse girl" who always dreamed of being a jockey and racing thoroughbreds, this was absolutely the next best thing. What a charge to see the spires and race around the track, even if it was on my own two much-slower feet than that of a thoroughbred!

New Challenges

Over time, my running morphed from a daily ritual for health purposes to something much more. It became a way for me to connect to other people, to new towns, to explore new places, and to stretch my own limits. As I mentioned, part of running is seeing what you are capable of--whether it's speed, distance, elevation, and so on. I blame my friend Pat for getting me into the longer distances (and she blames me)!

In 2008, I was looking for a new level of achievement so I signed up for the Disney Goofy, then the Frankenstein Ultra in Missouri (both road races). My first trail ultra was in beautiful Pine Mountain Georgia - 40 miles.  It was a blast! I found the longer distance really suited me, and I loved the extra challenge of seeing if I could go beyond the marathon. Since then I've done about a dozen ultras in Alabama, Georgia, Utah, and Tennessee, with my longest being a 100K.

Motivations

I think part of being human is always seeking to achieve more, to explore our surroundings and ourselves. It's the sense of adventure and mystery that makes it interesting and feeds my curiosity. Running does that for me. It's also the people--my running friends are my second family; they mean a great deal to me. We joke, laugh, cajole, support, and challenge each other. Through the many miles, we share our dreams, secrets, challenges, and the weather (whatever it is that day). It and they have blessed me in many ways.

Sensual Journey--a poem written by Kim while trail running

A spider web tickles my face

The foliage is flattened where the deer bedded down moments before

The sun rays dart through the trees dappling the paths, adding to the camouflage

The roots and rocks lay quiet, waiting for a break in concentration

A squirrel darts by flashing his tail, appearing bigger than he is

The bird songs melt into katydid calls, signaling the rise in temperatures

The burn creeps into my legs as proof of my hard work

The red, red mushrooms act as road markers telling me I've been here before

The sweat rolls down me, making me a human waterfall

These are the things I sense while trail running.
