Between the Lines: Helen Summer Are you Running Crazy or Mental!? In our current issue of Marathon & Beyond, Helen Summer shares her story "500 the Hard Way" about Englishman Steve Edwards, who set "a mark that won't easily be matched." In 2012, he set a world record for running 500 marathons in an average finishing time of 3:15:12. On his way to that record, Steve had run a total of 581 marathons at the time. His records are just part of the Steve Edwards story. Summer writes about Steve, "the man" behind the records. About her article in M&B, she notes, " The article is all about Steve Edwards's world record of 500 sub-3.30 marathons set in 2012 and was a delight to write, not only because the magazine allows for prose as well as facts, but also because Steve is one of the most genuine people I've ever had the good fortune to meet. To write about him is both a privilege and a pleasure. Oh, and by the way, Steve has since improved that record to over 635 official marathons with an average finish time of 3:18. I may be a writer, but sometimes mere words are not enough!" Summer met Steve when she was writing Running Crazy, a book about people who had run 100+ marathons. The 100 Marathon Club, also known as the "Hell's Angels of Running and Running Sluts" (running one race while thinking of another), is growing in number every year. This is a club with no prejudices and only one prerequisite for membership - the completion of 100 marathons. It is full of colorful, contrasting characters with idiosyncratic personalities and diverse lifestyles. They make up a gargantuan melting pot of humanity linked by one common desire - to run...and run...and run. Summer takes endurance sports to a whole different level in her latest book Mental! - The Toughest, Bloodiest, and Hardest Challenges in the World. Mental! looks at over 60 of the most extreme marathons, triathlons, bike rides, and other iconic endurance events from around the globe, taking in the hottest, coldest, highest, and most remote locations; and the toughest, cruelest, and wackiest challenges. In addition to a description of each event, Summer features personal stories from the athletes, including their massive highs and excruciating lows, and shows what we can achieve by pushing the bounds of human endeavor. Running Crazy is available on Amazon.com and in bookstores in the UK and the U.S. Mental! was recently released and is available through Amazon.co.uk. |

This partnership between Fort Bragg and the city of Fayetteville will bring thousands of runners, families, and spectators to the largest military installation in the world. Runners from forty-six states and two countries attended our first marathon, and people from four to eighty-five years old participated in this great event. Our first All-American Marathon courses were certified by the USA Track and Field Association, making the marathon a Boston Qualifier.
This year's race will begin at 7:30 a.m. downtown at Festival Park and finish at Fort Bragg's Main Post Parade Field. The course is intended to connect Fort Bragg with our beautiful city of Fayetteville.
The course, which starts at Festival Park, will take you past the Airborne & Special Operations Museum and Veteran's Park, then twist through the historic Haymount district. As runner's close in on Fort Bragg, they'll pass the infamous "Iron Mike," and finish at the Main Post Parade Field, where all the festivities will be. Subscriber / Author of the Month: Zoe Romano
Zoe Romano is a long-time reader and frequent contributor to M&B. An ultrarunner from Richmond, Virginia, Zoe "likes to run with a purpose," and she means it - she is considered a leader in adventure philanthropy.
In 2011, she ran 2,800 miles across the US, churning out 30 miles a day to become the first female to complete such a trek without a support vehicle. And, along the way she raised more than $15,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Zoe was "struck by the power of this odyssey run," she writes in her blog, for her own growth as well as for others.
Last year, she became the first person to run the entire route of the Tour de France. For a total of 2,000 miles, she averaged 30 miles a day for 10 weeks. Her article about her adventure, "Running in the Eye of the Tire," appeared in our Jan/Feb 2014 issue. Click here to read the article in its entirety.
Here are some highlights from her website tracking the feat:
- Started on May 18, six weeks ahead of the cyclists
- Finished on August 1, a week and a half after the official Tour finish
- Followed the cycling course, conquering renowned climbs such as Mont Ventoux, Col de La Madeleine, and back-to-back ascents of the Alpe D'Huez
- Burned through five pairs of shoes
- Ate 4,000 calories a day
- Ended the journey by running the entire final stage of 90 miles in one go, finishing in just under 23 hours
This adventure had purpose, too. Zoe raised more than $190,000 for the World Pediatric Project, an international nonprofit that treats children suffering from birth defects, illness, and injury while empowering local medical communities to better care for their children.
During the run, Romano writes that she encountered wild animals, rock slides, four straight weeks of rain, and overcame injury, sickness, and sun-poisoning. She met "painters, hermits, farmers, and mad scientists." She got lost, accidentally blew up a stove, and was "nearly arrested in Paris."
Her partner, photographer and filmmaker Alexander Kreher, traveled with her, driving as a one-man support team and documenting the journey. A film is in progress that captures how the pair experienced France a mile at a time; slept, lodged, and ran with local hosts; and viewed the Tour de France culture and cycling community as few others have. Here is a short trailer for the upcoming documentary about her run in France: http://zoegoesrunningfilm.com/.
