Crewing for an Ultra - Help or Hurt

In our current issue of Marathon & Beyond, Kara Garrod enumerates the "Top 10 Ways Your Crew Might Sabotage Your Finish." She speaks from first-hand experience, as she has supported family and friends in their ultra adventures. Crew members are invaluable to their runner. They do everything from massaging sore muscles to telling them when and what to eat. In her article, Kara outlines some common pitfalls that a crew or pacer may encounter and offers ways to ensure that your crew avoids them.

Here are a few highlights of her article - some advice on what NOT to do:
  • Be disorganized; assume you will clean up (or find something) later. A little organization goes a long way. Your runner shouldn't have to wait for you to find what he needs. A good crew member will keep him moving as fast as possible.
  • Forget your place, your role, or yourself, or become redundant. All details and job assignments should be made before you travel to the event. In the excitement of the event, sometimes crew members neglect their own care. You are no help to your runner if you are dehydrated, hungry, or sleepy. The runner needs crew members who are sharp and able to make decisions.
  • Be emotional, self-absorbed, or easily offended. This is a big one. It is somewhat excusable for the runner to be emotional or self-absorbed, as long as he warns you ahead of time, is gracious during the onslaught of craziness, and thanks you profusely for dealing with his attitude later. The crew is not allowed to act like this.
These are just 3 of the tips Kara offers to crew members. We asked our friends on Facebook if they had any tips on being a crew member. Here's what they said:

Philip: If you're thinking about crewing for someone, check their FB postings and Tweets for the last few months. If they are full of "drama," consider carefully before agreeing to crew.

Gaye: If your runner says that he or she wants to quit, don't listen until he/she has eaten, had something to drink, and has taken a rest.

Kristine: Have a complete understanding with them that there will be a point where they stop making decisions and you start. In all respects, understand that there is nothing that will happen that is all about you. It's all about them.

Cindy & Darren: Beware the chair.

Rob: Keep the negative away from the positive - don't let it spread.

Big Sur International Marathon
April 26, 2015
Monterey, California

From the race director of the Big Sur Marathon:

"The Big Sur Marathon sold out in a record 59 minutes last year.  While we were honored by this strong demand, it was clear that a single first-come, first-served registration period could be unfair to those who were unable to be online at the right time. For the 30th annual Big Sur International Marathon on April 26, 2015, we are offering a new plan. As in previous years, we will accept up to 4,500 Marathon entrants, and all entrants must be able to finish within six hours (13:45 minutes/mile)."

2015 Big Sur International Marathon Registration Plan and Schedule

Four first-come, first-served registration periods, 625 Entries available at each
  • Tuesday, July 15, at 10 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT)
  • Saturday, July 19, at 11 AM PDT
  • Wednesday, July 23, at 5 PM PDT
  • Sunday, July 27, at 4 PM PDT
Lottery
Following the four first-come, first-served registration periods, we will have a lottery for 500 entries.
  • We will accept lottery applications Tuesday, July 29 from 10 AM PDT through Wednesday, August 6, at 11:59 PM PDT.
  • All lottery applicants will pay a small, non-refundable lottery processing fee of $1.
  • All lottery applicants will be notified of selection status on Monday morning, August 11.
  • Those selected will be automatically charged the $150 marathon entry fee (plus the Active.com processing fee of $11.38).
JUST RUN Charity Entries
  •  300 JUST RUN charity entries will be available first-come, first-served for $300 starting July 15 at 10 AM PDT.
  • The additional $150 is a charitable contribution to our JUST RUN youth fitness program.
Boston 2 Big Sur Challenge
  • Registration for 400 B2B Challenge entries will be first-come, first-served and open the day after registration for the 2015 Boston Marathon closes.  This is expected to be late September or October 2014.
  • If you intend to enter B2B, please do not enter the regular marathon.
Locals' Last Chance In-Person Registration
Monterey County residents and Monterey County active military will have a final chance to register (quantity TBD) in person on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 10 AM at Treadmill in the Crossroads Carmel shopping center. Proof of Monterey County residency is required (driver's license, utility bill, etc.)
