with Grandma's Marathon

Marathon & Beyond is pleased to announce our new partnership with Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota. While we have supported Grandma's Marathon for many years, M&B is now an official race sponsor. M&B editor Rich Benyo will be the featured speaker with his presentation entitled "XI Commandments of Marathoning." And, we will host our 14th annual Marathon & Beyond dinner on Saturday, June 22, at the Holiday Inn for an evening of food, good cheer, and celebration. Grandma's Marathon legend Dick Beardsley will be our special guest at the dinner, where he will give an inspirational talk and even sing a few songs. The M&B dinner caps off a spectacular weekend for Grandma's Marathon runners. Watch for more details in next month's e-XTRA.

AIMS Museum of Running

In our Jan/Feb issue, editor Rich Benyo chronicled the history of AIMS (the Associations of International Marathons and Distance Races).

One of the founding members was Horst Milde, former race director of the Berlin Marathon. He was also the "spark plug," as the article describes him, behind the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running.

"The museum is a repository for everything from athletic measuring devices to prizes and trophies, flags and pennants, medals, films, and more," Rich writes in his profile. "Dave Martin, one of the foremost scientists working with distance runners and co-author of The Olympic Marathon, recently donated his vast collection of running books and magazines to the museum."

Here's some additional background on the museum.

AIMS Museum In 1997, under the Cultural Senate of Berlin and later the Berlin City Museum Foundation, the museum was established at the Berlin Olympic Park. Then, in 2003, one wing was renovated to help house the museum's 100,000 artifacts. And the collection continues to grow. For example, there is a display of the running gear worn by Haile Gebrselassie when he set the world record of 2:04:26 in Berlin on September 30, 2007. (Photo featured on the AIMS website.)

Also included are posters and memorabilia from around the world. Numerous races have provided material from their events, including Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon, Marine Corp Marathon, Tallinn Marathon, Prague Marathon, and Venice Marathon.

The OC Marathon
May 5, 2013
Orange County, California

The OC Marathon is considered one of the best full and half marathon courses in the state due to its diverse terrain, changing vistas and majestic ocean views. Cruise down historic Pacific Coast Highway through the seaside village of Corona del Mar, run above pristine wetlands of Upper Newport Bay, through the Arts District and shopping mecca of South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, the "Heart of the OC" to the supportive cheers of residents in the many diverse neighborhoods and finish with a huge party at the OC Fair and Event Center. The OC Marathon's mission to "Inspire Kids to Fitness," is best displayed on Saturday before the marathon as 5,000 kids take part in their own "Marathon" in the Kids Run the OC.

The OC Marathon is part of the Beach Cities Challenge Racing Series, a unique alliance among the OC Marathon, the Long Beach Marathon, and the Surf City USA Marathon--all of which utilize a portion of Pacific Coast Highway. Run all three in a row and get a huge extra "bling" medal.

Plan to come a few days early or stay a few extra to enjoy the perfect weather and beaches, Knott's Berry Farm or Disneyland, all just a few miles away, or go an hour north to see all that L.A. and Hollywood have to offer. Please join us on May 5, 2013 for this fast, net downhill Boston Qualifier. Pikes Peak Ascent & Marathon
August 17-18, 2013

Manitou Springs, Colorado

The Pikes Peak Ascent® and Pikes Peak Marathon® will redefine what you call running. Sure, they start out like a lot of races on Any Street, USA. But your first left turn will have you turning in the direction of up! During the next 10 miles, as you gain almost 6,000 vertical feet, your legs, lungs, heart and mind will be worn to a ragged nothingness. But it won't be until the next three miles, with still over 2,000' of vertical to go, that you will realize where the Marathon got its moniker - America's Ultimate Challenge.

There's a reason trees don't bother growing above 12,000' on Pikes Peak. They can't! Makes one wonder if trees are smarter than runners. Above treeline most runners take 30 minutes or more, some much more, just to cover a mile. What little air remains can't satisfy the endless stream of zombies hoping only to survive their next step. It's a death march right out of a scene from Dawn of the Dead. Adding insult to injury, it might start to snow!

It's at this point, if you are on the deluxe tour, you must turn around and run back down the mountain for the second half of the Marathon. Along the way, protruding rocks and roots are waiting to send you crashing to the ground mangling flesh and only temporarily masking the pain of blood-filled blisters. Meanwhile, the temperature has often risen by more than 30 degrees since the start of the race. After all, it's always best to cook raw meat.

Marty & Denise Hovey

Being a "running couple" means different things to different people. Denise and Marty Hovey define "Love on the Run" as they have been "running" together since their first Flying Pig Marathon. Denise has been at almost every one of Marty's 47 marathons (soon to be 48) except when she was running herself.

Denise and Marty Hovey met at the University of Cincinnati and married in July of 1972. At that time neither of them had any interest in running. In high school, Marty joined the track team focusing on the long jump, but no distance running. Denise had never done any kind of physical activity. After buying a house and starting a family, Marty tried a few neighborhood 5Ks but didn't think about going farther than 10K.

In 1998, Denise saw an article in the newspaper about a new marathon coming to Cincinnati, the Flying Pig Marathon. She really wanted to be a part of it, but knowing she could never run the race, she decided to volunteer and was asked to be the registrar. She suggested that Marty run the marathon, but he thought it was way beyond his abilities. After researching some training programs, Marty decided he would try the training and see how it went. At age 51, Marty ran his first marathon at the Inaugural Flying Pig Marathon. The last 6 miles were quite a struggle, and he didn't think he would ever do another marathon.

Denise was hired full time with the Flying Pig Marathon, and her travels to other marathons gave Marty opportunities to run other races. Five months after thinking he would never run another marathon, Marty ran the Chicago Marathon hoping to do better than his first. His finish time was not much better, but he was still interested in improving.

After working with the marathon for four years, Denise decided she needed to see what this running was all about. She had been walking with a neighbor, but when her walking partner moved away, Denise decided it was a good time to start running. She asked Marty to help her, and they started with 5 minutes of walking with a 1-minute run break and gradually changed the ratio until she could run for 5 minutes with a 1-minute walk break. Marty was always training for another marathon, so they did many training runs together and started doing 5K and 10K races together.

Relay Marty & Denise One of their most memorable events was the St. Louis Marathon of 2004 where they ran 4-person family relay. Marty actually did the entire marathon but was joined by his son, Eric, for the 2nd leg, his daughter, Alison, for the 3rd leg, and Denise for the 4th leg across the finish line. The kids joined their parents to cross the finish line together. They say they would like to do a relay together again in the near future.

Through Denise's work with the Flying Pig Expo, she met Jan Seeley, the publisher of Marathon & Beyond. Jan encouraged Marty and Denise to attend Dick Beardsley's Marathon Running Camp, and they signed up for the September camp in 2005. Marty was running a couple of marathons a year and was looking for ways to improve his running. Even though Denise had trained to do the half marathon associated with the camp, she did not consider herself a runner. She okayed it with Jan that she could just hang out "knitting on the deck" while Marty took part in the camp activities. Five minutes after arriving at camp, Denise asked Jan if there was space for one more camper. They both attended two more camps.

San Antonio Marathon In 2008, while training for the San Antonio Marathon (Denise's first marathon), Denise and Marty both signed up for the Akron half marathon as a training run. Due to knee problems, Denise had switched from running to walking. Marty decided that instead of running his own race, he would walk the half with Denise. They crossed the finish line together in just under three hours. Marty gained new respect for walkers when he experienced more soreness than from his marathon runs. Denise's knee improved, and she ran the San Antonio Marathon.

Denise and Marty had not participated in any events beyond marathon distance until they joined a team for the 2011 Reach the Beach 200-mile relay in New Hampshire. It was the first time since the San Antonio Marathon that Denise was an active member of a running team. She was the driver for one of the vans, but that was probably more demanding than the running the others were doing. The team appreciated her organizational skills that had been developed working at the marathon. She had gathered a binder of maps and event instructions that proved invaluable during the event. The entire team had a great time together.

Since his first marathon in 1999, Marty has gone on to run 47 marathons in 28 states. Denise has been his cheerleader at all but two of those races. She'll be there again this weekend when Marty crosses the finish line at the Mercedes Marathon, and they share a Valentine kiss.
