Prayer For Hurricane Season
Bishop Maurice Schexnayder (2nd Bishop of Lafayette, LA)

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former calmness; You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf of Mexico, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its sleep, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster.
During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us.
Amen.

For all seafarers who are just starting their careers, especially those who are struggling to find work in the current economic climate.

A Seafarers' Prayer

O God, I ask you to take me into your care and protection along with all those who sail ships.
Make me alert and wise in my duties. Make me faithful in the time of routine, and prompt to decide and courageous to act in any time of crisis.
Protect me in the dangers and perils of the sea; and even in the storm, grant that there may be peace and calm within my heart.
When I am far from home and far from loved ones and far from the country that I know,
help me to be quite sure that, wherever I am, I can never drift beyond your love and care.
Take care of my loved ones in the days and weeks and months when I am separated from them, sometimes with half the world between them and me.
Keep me true to them and keep them true to me, and every time that we have to part, bring us together in safety and in loyalty again.
This I ask for your love's sake.
-Amen-

Some went down to the sea in ships,

doing business on the great waters;

they saw the deeds of the Lord,

Star of the Sea, Great Mother of God and Our Mother, you know all dangers of soul and body that threaten seamen.
Protect your sons who sail the seas, and protect also their families that await their return.
Star of the Sea, Mother of the Church, give light and strength to those priests and laymen who bring the love of your Divine Son among seamen.
Fill their hearts with a supernatural and life giving zeal for the apostolate.
Star of the Sea, light shining in the darkness, be a guide to those who sail amid the storms and dangers of life.
Stir up in their midst the hearts of ardent apostles and bring us all to the safety of heaven's port.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on all those who sail the seas.

O, Star of the Sea, help and protect us from the danger of hurricanes and floods and all perils of nature.

-Amen

Prayer to Avert Storms

Father, all the elements of nature obey your command.
Calm the storms that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise for your goodness.
Grant this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
-Amen-

For those mariners at sea, we pray this special prayer:

Hurricane Matthew Shuts Down Major Cruise Ports

5 October 2016

Starting Tuesday evening, the United States Coast Guard has activated precautions or have start shutting down cruise ports along the southeast coast. Under these circumstances, vessels have to leave the port within four hours of gale force (in excess of 39 mph) winds.

Cruise Ports Effected

The current information was pulled from the cruise port website's:
  • Port Miami, Thursday and re-opening Friday
  • Port Everglades, currently at condition Yankee. This means that Gale force winds (in excess of 39 mph) are expected in the next 24 hours.
  • Port Canaveral, closing Wednesday at noon and remaining closed until further notice
  • Jacksonville, the current port condition requires all vessels to be in contact with the Captain of the Port
  • Charleston, closing Thursday and remaining closed until further notice
Marine traffic will not be permitted to sail into these ports unless they get a special permit from the Captain of the Port.

Cruise Diversions

Royal Caribbean has warned guests embarking on Empress of the Seas, "Due to the storm, PortMiami is planning to close to all marine traffic on Thursday and reopen on Friday. Because of this, Empress of the Seas next sailing will now depart on Friday, October 7."
Carnival Victory is unloading guests a day early in Port Canaveral and heading back out to sea to ride out the storm.

Cruise Scheduled?

The cruise lines make itinerary changes and scheduled adjustments on an hourly basis. If you have a cruise scheduled from a Florida port over the next couple days, check with the cruise line or cruise line website.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm is forecasted to skirt up the Florida, Georgia, and Carolina coast before weakening.

Typhoon Chaba Batters Port of Busan: Seafarers Rescued

At least three people have been killed in South Korea by Typhoon Chaba, and a crew of seafarers had a narrow escape from the storm, which battered the south of the country today.

The port of Busan has remained closed for a second day as Chaba made its way east to Japan. A port official told Reuters the facility is expected to reopen later today.

Six crew from a ferry berthed at Busan Port reportedly had to be saved after gigantic waves swept them off a jetty and into the sea.

Operations have been suspended at some shipyards along the south coast, including at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering's (DSME) yard in Geoje city, according to reports from Korea's Yonhap news agency.

The tropical depression's maximum wind speed is 100kt, which is forecast to fall to 80kt on Thursday, according to a circular from Inchcape Shipping Services.

Work at Hyundai Motor's two factories in the city of Ulsan has been suspended because of "inflow of water", a company spokeswoman said.

Over 900 schools have been closed in Busan and over 80 flights from the city's airport have been cancelled. Some 52,000 homes in Jeju are without power.

Three people remain missing, according to Korea's Ministry of Public Safety and Security.
