Christmas Message 2014

Dear People of the Sea,

Once again the feast of Christmas is here, a moment of grace and joy that some of you will spend with the family, while many others will be far away from the loved ones, perhaps at sea or in distant and unknown ports.

In this time, the economic crisis still do not guarantee a secure and long-lasting employment, and the threat of piracy in various ways and forms, remains persistent. In this moment in which, despite the Conventions and the international law, not always the rights to a secure and decent job is assured, and many other situations of injustice make your life and that of your families challenging, I want to extend to all of you this message for Christmas.

The Son of God became one of us to share our hopes and concerns. Let us pause for a moment in front of the crib. Let us look at the Baby Jesus in the manger, with open arms to welcome in his Love each one of us, with our fragilities, without boundaries and discrimination.

It is the same Love that chaplains and volunteers of the Apostleship of the Sea are trying every day to spread in many ports around the world with ships visit and the service at the Stella Maris Centers. A Love that is transformed in support for the abandoned and forgotten crews in foreign ports by ship's owners, that restores dignity to the work and fatigue of the people of the sea, that does justice to prevail over injustice and grow into welcoming for all, regardless of nationality, race and believe.

I wish that, through the intercession of Mary Star of the Sea, the Love of the Lord Jesus who comes this Christmas can reach all seafarers, fishers and their families wherever they are, and offer them Consolation, Hope and Courage for a renewed and redeemed world.

In the joy of the Nativity, I bless you all with great affection in the Lord.

As we approach Christmas, that most holy of days honoring our savior's birth, my thoughts drift to all the mariners who will be aboard ships and away from their families.

Being aboard ship on Christmas was always a tough day for me personally. I thought of my family waking up, and the kids excitedly rushing to the living room to see what gifts were there. But first, my wife had them put the baby Jesus in the Nativity set and sing Happy birthday Jesus!

We still put the baby Jesus in the stable each Christmas morning, and now when the grandkids arrive, they immediately check to make sure that pop-pop and Grandmom did their job taking care of Jesus.

That was indeed a sad and lonely moment when sailing, but I knew I shared my absence from loved ones with my shipmates. I know that aboard my ships, and on many ships around the world, the ship's catering staff put on special meals, decorate the crew quarters, and the seafarers make the best of being away from home. In this modern day, many can now call home, or Skype with family back in their home country. Not the same as being there but what an improvement since I sailed.

We must acknowledge, and remember, that there are also many seafarers for whom Christmas is just another work day with no festivities on board, and tough working and living conditions which do not lessen on Christmas day. I can not imagine what a tough situation that must be for a Christian Mariner away from his or her family and sailing under such conditions.

I strongly encourage all of you to support all seafarers, and especially your local seamen centers, so that they can bring some cheer, good will, and the Lord's message to seafarers in their respective ports.

I know in Philadelphia, Lake Charles, Port Arthur, and Houston, and many others US Ports "ditty bags", or shoe boxes are filled with personal goods, sweets, and small gifts for seafarers aboard ships in port. Such events are being done world wide by seafarer welfare organizations of many faiths.

This year, when surrounded by the love of your families at Christmas, say a prayer for the safety of the world's seafarers, and for the blessings of Our Lady, Star of the Sea on all who work and sail upon the world's waters.

Merry Christmas to you all, and have a Happy, Safe, and Blessed New Year

George

CDoreen_June2013hristmas in their Hearts: Holland  America Cruise Passengers Making a Difference!

   By:  Doreen M. Badeaux

Secretary General

I have a beautiful story to share with you this Christmas.  The story actually began in July, when I was contacted by Reni & John Chamberlain, who are 3 Star Mariner Club Members of Holland America Line.

They were on a cruise last Spring onboard the STATENDAM, and were thrilled by the fact that the ship collected clothing items, school supplies, etc for inhabitants of Fanning Island, a small island in the South Pacific.

Passengers actually visited with islanders and brought them gifts. Reni  met a lady named Lupea and her family, and was so moved to see how happy they all were, despite their meager living conditions. So she determined that she would like to send more items to them.

Thanks to Fr. Frank Wagner, who was the Cruise Ship Priest onboard, she got my contact information, and once she returned home, Reni called.  She  said that STATENDAM would depart Oct 3 from San Diego, (where she lives), and though she could not take that cruise, she would like to find a way to collect supplies, and send them to Fanning Island via the STATENDAM. She hoped we would have a priest onboard who could assist.

Thanks to Deborah Meador, Supplemental Staffing Supervisor at Holland America Line (HAL), who handles the Clergy program onboard, we were able to confirm that HAL would accept packages onboard for the trip.  And truly, the company was excited and honored to help. As Deborah said, "I'm so thankful for people like the Chamberlains.   They give me hope!"

Over the months, Reni would give me updates, and I could tell that her excitement was contagious! In one note she wrote:  Just wanted you to know that my donation effort is going well:  many of my Curves (where I exercise) friends have put school supplies into the box I left there.  I set a deadline of Sept.15th to leave me enough time to get the right size boxes and have them ready to take down to the pier on Oct.3rd.

The manager of my local Walmart authorized  10% discount on anything I purchased, plus $50 off the entire bill.  So I bought more school stuff including mechanical pencil sharpeners, blunt tip scissors, coloring books, glue sticks, colored folders and several packs of loose leaf paper.  Also 16 kids' t-shirts, 8 each red and aqua blue, all different sizes. (Lupea had told me the kids like to play team sports)"

Meanwhile, I contacted the priest scheduled onboard, Fr. Walter J. Smith, SJ, and he immediately agreed to assist in any way possible, and he began dialoguing with Reni as well.

October 3rd finally arrived and Reni & John brought the gifts to the ship, complete with a photo of Lupea and directions to her home to help Fr Smith find her.

On October 25, Fr. Smith sent an e-mail to Reni, stating,

"Just a brief note to let you know that the two cases were safely delivered to your friends' home. They were so touched by your loving care for them. I blessed their entire family. Your map was perfect. I found them without difficulty. She had the framed picture you gave her right in her home!"

Reni's response was beautiful, "Oh Father, that is such wonderful news!  God bless you for all you have done to make this happen. I am sure the family was grateful for your visit and your blessing. I cannot even fathom having to live without easy access to the Sacraments....  How sad that we so often forget how fortunate we are."

Indeed, we are all truly blessed, and this story is my way of saying how truly blessed I am to be a part of AOS-USA.  Working with our Mariners, Port Chaplains, Cruise Ship Priests, Maritime Deacons, Lay Ecclesial Ministers, Cruise Passengers, Travel Agents, and so many others, is always unique, interesting, and a true honor.

May God Bless each of you with a Blessed & Merry Christmas!

Doreen

Fr Sinclair Oubre photo  Sadness for a Chinese Family During this Christmas Season

Diocesan Director AOS - Diocese of Beaumont

As the Catholic community gathered to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the crew of the M/V CF Chrystal called at the Port of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and were visited by the Diocese of Lake Charles' Apostleship of the Sea's maritime minister, Deacon Patrick LaPoint.

Because the crew did not have D-1 visas, they were unable to have shore leave, but Deacon Patrick visited the crew, and brought them phone cards to help call their families thousands of miles away.

Around December 10, the CF Chrystal completed cargo operations, and set sail for Port Arthur. She arrived at the anchorage off Sabine Pass, and dropped anchor, waiting for orders to proceed to PabTex in Port Arthur. While at anchorage, on December 13, one of the seafarers was working over the side of the vessel, when he fell into the water.

Channel 12 reported that USCG Sector Houston/Galveston received a report at 9:00 a.m., that a 29-year-old Chinese seafarer, Qian Chun Hua, had fallen overboard while painting the vessel's hull.

The crew threw the seafarer a lifering, but they couldn't get it to him. Soon thereafter, the seafarer went under, and was lost.

On Sunday, December 14, Deacon Patrick contacted me about the tragedy. I had already known about the issue, but it was great to know that Deacon Patrick was also on the alert and following up on the crew that he had just seen.

That same day, the ship arrived in Port Arthur. On Monday morning, December 15, our AOS Ship Visitor Alvin Adams and I visited the vessel, and met with the Chief Officer. We expressed our condolences to the crew, and offered them the services of the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center even though the crew could not leave the vessel.

Finally, I asked if it would be permissible to go forward, and offer a prayer at the place where Mr. Hua was lost. The Chief Officer kindly agreed, and I headed forward along the starboard side of the vessel, accompanied by Mr. Adams and one of the AB's.

At the site of the tragedy, we prayed the Catholic prayers at the time of death, and sprinkled the location with holy water.

The M/V CF Chrystal completed loading of petroleum coke on Tuesday, December 16, and sailed. The crew sailed away knowing that they were leaving one of their ship mates in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico, but hopefully they also knew that there were Catholic communities in Port Arthur and Lake Charles standing with them in their loss, and keeping them in their prayers.

Merry Christmas to All and to All Fair Winds & Following Seas!
