Notes from Friends & Colleagues

Thank you for the awful sad news of Fr Rivers RIP.   It must be a frightful shock for all his family and friends and of course the other Houston Chaplains, Staff and colleagues who knew him for such a long time. No doubt they must be heartbroken.

I have arranged Mass for him RIP and everyone associated with him for 0830 hours on Friday.   He was such a faithful member of AOS-USA and respected worldwide - he made friends with everybody.

When I attended the Houston School (all those years ago!) he took me to and from the Convent where I was staying with the late (RIP) Irish nun for the duration of the course.   Lord rest him - he will be missed by all of you in the US and indeed by so many who knew him in all corners of the globe.

God Bless

To AOS USA  sincere condolences from the Nederlandse Zeemanscentrale (Netherlands) on the passing of Fr. Rivers Patout. A great loss for his family and friends, but also for seafarers' ministry. You will surely miss him.

Personally I had the privilege to meet Fr. Rivers in New Orleans, at the ICMA World Conference. A character indeed. Two years ago he visited one of my predecessors in Rotterdam, his friend the Revd. Jaap Bakker and it was wonderful to see that he was still in full blast. How quickly things have changed. We will say a prayer for those he leaves behind.

All the best to you and the seafarers' work on your side of the world. God speed.

kind regards,
Helene Perfors

Dear AOS family,

It is indeed a sad time for us in the loss of Fr. Rivers.  He was not only an outstanding port chaplain and excellent ecumenical collaborator, but he was truly a peoples' priest.  He loved his parishioners, he loved the seafarers, he loved his colleagues, he loved his family, he loved God's people.  Do not let our human sadness overshadow our faith filled joy in the knowledge that Jesus felt it was time for Fr. Rivers to come home.  He is now feeling the embrace of our loving Father, enjoying the presence of our Savior, Jesus, and so filled with the Spirit that his soul is brilliant- shining like a beacon for the souls of seafarers who are also being called "home".  We will miss him.  And we are grateful to him for his love.

Peace be with us,
Karen Parsons OFS
