A Tough Week for Our AOS Family

Dear Friends,

This has been a rough week for our AOS Family. The week began with news of the passing of Deacon Ed Vargas in Hawaii, quickly followed by the passing of Brother Anthony Ornelas in Houston.

On Thursday night, we lost a long time volunteer, and former employee of the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center, Miss Khiem Nguyen at the young age of 34.  Khiem was born with heart problems, but was always vibrant and bubbly and happy to help.  And though 34, she seemed more like everyone's baby sister.
Khiem Nguyen volunteering with Fr. Sinclair at a fund raiser for the Port Arthur International Seafarers' Center.

Her family had a shrimp boat when she was younger and she knew the difficulties that shrimpers faced, and so she was always happy to serve the mariners at the Seafarers' Center, because she felt she understood them and their families.

During the New Year holiday she suffered a stroke, and has been in ICU ever since. On Thursday night, her Mom phoned to say that she had stopped breathing, and though the Doctors continued to try to revive her, her little body had simply had enough.

We have asked for prayers for her in the e-news for the past few months, and we appreciate those of you who have prayed for her, though you may not have known her. Now we ask for prayers for her family, that God may comfort and console them.

And now, I would also like to ask that we say a special prayer for one another while at Mass this weekend. Let us pray that God will sustain each of us, and our ministries in each of our ports and bring more workers to the vineyard.

Star of the Sea, Pray for us,

Doreen M. Badeaux
Secretary General
