Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant
Delia_Albert
Deacon Albert Dacanay and his wife Delia. Deacon Albert is the AOS National Director for Canada, and the Regional Coordinator for AOS North America and the Caribbean. Delia, his kids, his in-laws, and the entire family have been a part of his ministry to Seafarers for many years now.

It is with a heavy heart that we learned Deacon Albert Dacanay, our AOS Regional Coordinator for North America and the Caribbean, will be leaving the AOS Ministry for other duties in his Diocese.

I met Deacon Albert around 1995 or 1996 at a North American Maritime Ministry Association (NAMMA) Conference. Later, we served together on the NAMMA Board and that is when I really got to know him and learned just how talented he was. He brought technological skills to the table, and created NAMMA's first website. However, what I recognized the most at that time, was that he was a Maritime Minister who really did the hard work of a dedicated Port Chaplain. And, he had an inner calmness and spirituality that enabled him to work with everyone and to help ease tensions whenever difficulties arose.

Later, when he became the National Director for AOS Canada, I knew they had found a great leader. He went on to become the Regional Coordinator for AOS North America and the Caribbean. Though this is a position that has no funding, he took it on, and has spent a great deal of his personal funds to accomplish the goals of AOS North America.

As Regional Coordinator he has worked hard to ensure that the AOS Vatican Office knew what was going on within AOS throughout the Region. When AOS-USA was going through some major changes a few years ago, he was solicitous of us and always had time to listen to our needs, and to give sage advice.

There was one challenging meeting where Deacon Albert consoled and reassured me by saying "Don't worry. Delia and I have been praying for the Peace of Christ to be present at this meeting." He told me that several times, and then the day of the meeting came. I got up to speak, and the moment I did, I felt utter calm. The meeting went smoothly and I knew that it was the Peace of Christ which had truly entered the room that day. There was no other explanation.

I had never experienced that Peace of Christ in such a real way. I learned that it is very real, and I learned that from Deacon Albert and his wife Delia.

I've thought about that many times since, and have learned to truly pray for the Peace of Christ, for myself, and for others. So today, I would like to ask each of you to join me in prayer. Pray that the Peace of Christ will be with Deacon Albert and Delia Dacanay as they start a new journey.

May Our Lady Star of the Sea & Her Son be their constant Companions,

Fr. Sinclair Oubre, JCL - President of AOS-USA, and Deacon Albert Dacanay, National Director for AOS Canada, and Regional Coordinator AOS North America and the Caribbean.

When one studies the history of the Apostleship of the Sea, there are stars that arise on the maritime ministry horizon at just those critical times. At the early part of the 20th century, Peter Anson, Arthur Gannon and Brother Daniel Shields came together to reestablish Catholic Maritime Ministry in Glasgow, and in a few years, encouraged fellow Catholics to establish similar missions throughout the world.

A decade later, Fr. Hans Reinhold ministered at the AOS Club in Hamburg, and spoke out against the rising evil of Nazism. Fr. Hans was forced to escape to the Netherlands, and then traveled to Seattle, where he established the Catholic Seamen's Mission that continues today in downtown Seattle.

In a few years when the history of the Canadian Catholic Apostolate is written, not only will Dr. W.H. Atherton be remembered for founding Montreal Catholic Sailors' Club at the beginning of the 1900's, but it will also remember Deacon Albert Dacanay for his great, passionate promotion of Catholic maritime ministry in the Port of Toronto, as the Canadian National Director, and as the AOS-North American Regional Coordinator.

I have been privileged to work with Deacon Albert for many years, and his support, guidance, prudence and enthusiasm have been a valuable help for me.

As the Lord closes this ministry stage, I am sure that the Lord will guide Deacon Albert in new ways, so that he may continue to serve the People of God.

Very Rev. Sinclair Oubre, J.C.L.

President - AOS USA

The Final Edition of The Morning Star

For many years now, The Morning Star has been produced for AOS Canada and AOS North America and the Caribbean. Deacon Albert and his family produced this magazine, largely through the efforts of his daughter Honey Dacanay.

The final edition is below. We encourage you to read it in it's entirety.  And we send a little "shout out" to Honey, for the good work that she has done on this newsletter for so many years! It is real challenge to create a newsletter on a regular basis, and we appreciate the work that goes into this. We also salute the entire family of Deacon Albert and Delia Dacanay. Each found their way to support the diaconal ministry that he chose. This is a beautiful challenge to all of us to support those vocations in our midst!
