Quotes of the Week

"You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

- Matthew 5: 14-16 (NRSV

"When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love."

-  Marcus Aurelius

By mobilizing a community of volunteers we aim to strengthen and give hope to our community, one family at a time.

The weekend will kick off Friday afternoon at 4:00 at the Rusk Civic Center. All materials and supplies can be picked up there. You will need to bring your supplies back to the Civic Center when stopping work Friday evening. Supper will be provided there.

Saturday morning will begin with breakfast (7:00am) at the Civic Center. Materials, supplies and sack lunches will be ready for you by 7:30.

Crews needing to start earlier may be accommodated. You may work as long as the job requires, until the celebration time at 6:30pm. Our Saturday night celebration dinner will be at the Civic Center. This will be a sit down dinner and celebration of the accomplishments of the weekend. All volunteers and homeowners are invited!

Texas A&M Forest Service & Cherokee County Master Gardeners Free Workshop on Wildfire Preparedness - 4/5/14

Homeowners interested in learning how to protect their homes from wildfires will get the opportunity next month. Texas A&M Forest Service and the Cherokee County Master Gardeners club will host a free workshop to educate residents on the importance of having homes ready in the event of a wildfire.

"Since the busy wildfire season of 2011, we've noticed more interest in home protection from wildfires," said Jason Ellis, district forester at Texas A&M Forest Service. "The intent of this workshop is to provide useful information to homeowners, especially those living in the wildland urban interface."

The workshop will include an outdoor tour of the Firewise Demonstration Garden and cover a variety of topics including: East Texas wildfire history, Firewise landscaping, fire resistant plants, fuels reduction, and wildfire preparedness.

The course is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., April 5 at the Ruth Bowling Nichols Arboretum, 1015 SE Loop 456 Jacksonville. It is located behind the Texas A&M Forest Service District office.

There is no cost to attend the workshop, but space is limited to 60 participants.
