The NIH & NIMH (National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Mental Health) most recent statistics show:
Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15-44.
Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year.
Approximately 40 million American adults ages 18 and older, or about 18.1 percent of people in this age group in a given year, have an anxiety disorder.
These statistics are astounding! What's even more interesting is that these illnesses, usually referred to as "mental" are typically thought of as an issue that lies strictly in the brain.
While it is true that chemical imbalances play a role in anxiety and depression, the real question is: "What is causing that imbalance; what is the root cause?"
As many of you know, I have been successfully counseling with individuals for more than 18 years. I like to call myself a "functional biochemical nutritionist" which identifies root cause issues. How does the food we eat, the water we drink and the thoughts we think translate into ideal nutrition? How toxic are our bodies and what combination of nutrients are we missing to, among other things, cause proper synapse firing?
It might surprise most people that serotonin, a very important neurotransmitter, is made in the gut, which makes intestinal health extremely important for "mental" issues such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar, ADHD, etc. So, my job as a functional biochemical nutritionist is to find root causes affecting the gut such as gluten sensitivity, chemical exposure, heavy metal toxicity, etc. I hope that makes sense!
I recently asked a physician friend of mine (who realizes the value of not only treating symptoms), how physicians know which drugs to prescribe for psychotic issues. She responded sadly that it depended on which drug the pharmaceutical rep was pushing on their most recent visit!

Isaiah 61:1
"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and freedom to prisoners."
Twenty four years ago, I dealt with my own demons of depression. I know He healed me in order to bring hope and help to the hopeless.
