Howard Garrett is a highly respected landscape architect by training, plus author of more than a dozen books on organic gardening, landscaping and pest control. He has spoken out on West Nile virus by saying that spraying for mosquitos that have the potential to carry this virus does more harm than good. He says, "One person has died this year from West Nile. And while even a single death is tragic, thousands more have died from asthma and other respiratory diseases, which can be aggravated by the spraying of harsh chemicals."
Garrett says that spraying may increase the mosquito problem by killing beneficial insects such as dragonflies that help control mosquitoes.

- Treat water that cannot be emptied with gambusia fish or Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis Israelensis) products such as Bactimos Briquettes or Mosquito Dunks. These can be found at Home Depot and Lowes.
- Use skin repellents that contain natural repellent herbs such as aloe vera, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lavender, vanilla, citronella, etc.
- DEET products are toxic and should not be used, especially on children, as is stated on the label.
Here is a fantastic all-natural recipe for insect repellent from Pam, a friend of mine:
Combine in a 16 oz bottle:
15 drops lavender oil (available from Nutritional Direction)
3-4 Tbsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup lemon juice (bottled works fine)
Fill bottle with purified water and shake.
I like to keep it fresh, so I only make one-quarter of the recipe, using a 4-ounce bottle, each time. I used this on vacation in Florida and it works great! You can relax knowing you are keeping your children safe, plus not burdening their little bodies with harmful toxins.
