"Thursday's Tip"

April 18, 2013

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings
from Dr. Sharon R. Price, PhD., CN.
Periodontal Disease and Vitamin P
Pink Toothbrush could be a sign of a more serious condition!
This most important vitamin that we now call "Bioflavonoids," was originally named "Vitamin P" for "permeability" vitamin.  When your diet is low in bioflavonoids your capillaries become weak, or permeable, and leak blood.  This can show up anywhere in the body but is commonly seen with "pink toothbrush."
Did you know that if your gums bleed easily when you brush or you have periodontal disease you are at a great risk for heart disease?  In fact, this is a strong indication that you likely have increased levels of C-reactive protein (discussed in an eNewsletter - 10.27.2011 - www.nutritionaldirection.com, see previous newsletters on home page), a marker of inflammation that can cause artery plaque and other serious health problems.
It would be wise to check your blood for high levels of "C-reactive protein, Cardiac" and watch closely for other signs besides gum bleed that your body is begging for bioflavonoids, such as:
  • varicose veins
  • hemmorhoids
  • ringing in the ears
  • ulcerative colitis
  • migraine headaches
  • bruising
Another frightening connection to a deficiency in this area is strokes due to cerebral hemorrhage, as well as diabetic retinitis where capillaries start to break up in the retina.
Patients with any of these conditions should consider increasing bioflavonoids in their diets, such as citrus fruits, mangos, papayas, red bell peppers, buckwheat, spinach, garlic, green tea, organic red wine.
It would be prudent to supplement with Standard Process Cyruta Plus at 6 tablets/day to help expedite recovery from this deficiency and return to a healthier state quickly.
Interestingly, Cyruta is the trade name for buckwheat, which is one of the richest sources of bioflavonoids, especially rutin from nature.
Other interesting facts:  Buckwheat is misunderstood by many to be a cereal grain, but it is actually a fruit seed that is related to rhubarb, making it a suitable grain substitute for people who are sensitive to wheat or other grains that contain the protein gluten.
