Is Elevated Uric Acid the New Cholesterol?
I wrote about Uric acid in an eNewsletter a couple of years ago, but with emerging research, it bears repeating. Uric Acid: This damaging crystalline acid is a byproduct of cells that break down; cells that break down and die off prematurely increase uric acid level.
- Uric acid cannot be metabolized by the body and therefore must be excreted through the kidneys.
- Elevated uric acid level is a clinical indicator and early warning sign for inflammation and resulting circulatory disorders. It begs the question, "Is elevated uric acid the new cholesterol?"
- High uric acid levels are associated with gout. Although not everyone with increased uric acid ends up with gout.
- Low uric acid levels indicate poor utilization of protein such as that associated with MS (multiple sclerosis).
