Mercury Light Bulbs
Energy saving light bulbs have been around for quite some time. You may have some of these in your home - most of them have a cork-screw type shape. It is amazing to me that with the "benefit" of a small amount of savings in energy, the other option is to expose ourselves to mercury, one of the most toxic metals on the planet. Is it not enough that we have pesticides sprayed on our food, pthalates, PBAs, plasticizers, exhaust fumes, and now GM (genetically modified) foods? A green bean is no longer a green bean!
I would strongly encourage you to rid your house of these dangerous bulbs. All of these toxic mercury bulbs are going to end up in a landfill somewhere, not to mention the current danger to adults and children in the home. If my words aren't enough, then read the warning from none other than the manufacturer of these toxic bulbs:
- if one breaks, everybody will have to leave the room for at least 15 minutes, because it contains mercury (poisonous) which causes migraines, disorientation, imbalances and other health problems when inhaled.
- do NOT clean the debris of a broken bulb with a vacuum cleaner, because it will spread the contamination to other rooms in the house when using the vacuum cleaner again. It must be cleaned up with a normal broom or brush, be kept in a sealed bag and disposed of right away in a bin for hazardous materials.
- WARNING: Mercury is dangerous, more poisonous than lead or arsenic!
Go back to the old-timey round, I-got-an-idea-bulb! Mercury has an affinity for (likes to reside in) the brain and the central nervous system and has been implicated in among other diseases, MS (Multiple Sclerosis). Folks, I'm just trying to help!
Other sources of mercury: Dental amalgams, large fish, water supplies, seeds treated with mercurial fungicide, medications, adhesives, floor waxes, fabric softeners, plus it passes through the placental wall to the unborn child.
