What Does Digestion Have To Do With Bone Loss?
New research from a study of more than 60,000 Canadians aged 50 and older found that those who took acid blocking drugs for acid reflux for five years were more than 1.5 times likely to have hip fractures. Rate of fractures increased as length of time on acid blockers increased.
Examples of these acid blocking drugs, also called PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) are Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid.
Here's the problem: These drugs, as with many other drugs, are being used to treat a symptom without fixing the underlying cause. Symptoms of too much stomach acid can be exactly the same as too little acid. Without sufficient acid in the stomach, food will sit in the stomach for longer than necessary and ferment, causing a chemical chain reaction that prevents dumping into the small intestine. This gaseous fermentation causes the "lid" from the stomach to the esophagus to open resulting in "acid reflux".
Stomach acid is critical to the absorption of vitamins and minerals - minerals necessary to prevent osteoporosis and its predecessor, osteopenia.
Other reasons for excessive bone loss and/or inability to build bone:
Stress - increases general body acid causing increased need for minerals. If the need is not met from dietary supplements, minerals will be stripped from bone and teeth.
Heavy metals - cadmium and lead prefer to reside in the bone, pushing out critical minerals for ideal bone mass.
Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency potentially caused by excessive consumption of grain-fed red meat, fast food, packaged food, etc.
Hydrochloric acid deficiency in the stomach.
Improper thyroid function - thyroid hormones signal proper movement of calcium throughout the body.
Phosphorous or other mineral deficiency
Fungus, bacteria, parasites - lead to malabsorption of minerals and other necessary nutrients in the small intestine.

There is no separation between physical, emotional and spiritual health; they spill into one another.
