Soy - Health Food or Marketing Hype?
"Those of you who know me know that I am a researcher at heart. There is no better business to be in than the medical and natural health fields to have new studies, new science and new data rapidly emerge - a researcher's paradise. My interest in a particular subject is piqued when I see new information that warrants further scientific research and documentation."
I wrote those words in my Winter 2001 Newsletter. I still do not consume soy nor recommend it to my clients. Since that time I continue to see new research about the negative effects of soy and soy products.
Dr. Mary Enig, PhD says, "The reason there's so much soy in America is because they (the soy industry) started to plant soy to extract the oil from it and soy oil became a very large industry. Once they had as much oil as they did in the food supply they had a lot of soy protein residue left over, and since they can't feed it to animals, except in small amounts, they had to find another market." So they created a market, much the same as was done with flouride.
Just a few of the reasons I still don't recommend soy or soy products:
- soy prevents the absorption of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc
- soy blocks pancreas enzymes, which is the very enzyme that is needed to digest soy
- soy processing creates a high aluminum content
- nitrates (cancer-causing agents) and other chemical toxins are formed during the processing of soybeans
- MSG and other artificial flavorings are added to TVP (texturized vegetable protein) to make it more palatable
- soy increases thyroid damage and/or contributes to existing thyroid disorders
- most of the soy grown in the US is genetically modified (GMO)
- soy is a phytoestrogen - which can mimic estrogen, rather than block it
- soy causes red blood cells to stack together
- soy contains high amounts of the pro-inflammatory omega 6 fatty acid
