Secrets to Aging Gracefully
Research has shown that there is a definite connection between the foods we eat and the rate at which we age. At Nutritional Direction, we consistently emphasize the importance of good nutrition and the healthy habits for successful aging, as well as optimal wellness.
Insulin & Cortisol Accelerate Aging
Two hormones, insulin and cortisol, are the most aging biochemicals in the body, when continuously produced in excess. By-products of either of these two hormones in over-drive create inflammation and oxidation. Oxidation and certain kinds of inflammation are processes occuring in the body that we can't necessarily feel.
Inflammation could be carotid artery plaquing, which can lead to heart attack or stroke. The oxidation process might include the cells of the body actually becoming brittle due to mineral, fluid, or essential fatty acid deficiency. We certainly can't feel that, until it turns up in, say, osteoarthritis, eczema, or macular degeneration.
What causes these hormones to operate in over-drive?
1. Excessive intake of simple sugars and carbohydrates result in excessive output of insulin (hyperinsulinimia), until such time that the pancreas is too fatigued to even produce insulin (diabetes). Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to help stabilize blood sugar.
2. On-going unmanaged stress causes continued elevation of cortisol levels. Cortisol is one of the many hormones produced by the adrenal glands.
Dietary intake is a key component to stabilize these hormones in order to prevent accelerated aging or to reverse the aging process.
