The Branford Marsalis Quartet & Special Guest Kurt Elling
Soar on Upward Spiral
Available June 10 on OKeh Records
Summer Tour Starts June 25!
Upward Spiral, Branford Marsalis' new album with special guest Kurt Elling, is his first leader project since In My Solitude, and it reunites the pioneering saxophonist with his brilliant longtime Quartet, pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner.
Marsalis explained that the goal from the outset of this project was to create a true feeling of partnership. "The goal here, even though he sings lyrics, is to highlight Kurt's voice as an instrument."
Elling welcomed the opportunity to record with Marsalis' Quartet.
"I love singing with a hard-hitting band," he said. "To be welcomed into the quartet's circle, which is all about new challenges and hard blowing, was very important to me. When I asked Branford what to bring about a week before the date, he said 'Don't worry, you've got the thing.' So I brought 'the thing.'" Recorded during a weeklong session in New Orleans, Upward Spiral is a collection that blends Great American Songbook staples, modern jazz standards and popular music mainstays from a diverse array of composers.

Your Moment of Elling . . .
I grew up with music being tied to the consciousness
of moving people to a higher plane of experience.
I learned the sense of the joy of music,
the way the spirit can be lifted up by music,
the way people can be healed by music,
and that's what I hope to continue to bring
and share with audiences wherever we go.
