June 2015: PASSION WORLD ~ Out & On Tour!
|
| |
|
| Kurt Elling / Passion World Concord Jazz 2015 |
Now available!
Passion World is Kurt Ellings's most "worldly" album to date, as he casts his net far and wide, from Brazil to Ireland, Germany to France, Scotland to Cuba to Iceland.
And Passion World is indeed all about "passions" - the forces that shake our souls.
As one of the busiest touring jazz artists, Kurt has encountered these passions around the world; he has observed how the same depth of feeling is shaped in different ways by each unique culture through which it is filtered.
The result is an album vibrant with diversity and variety, and at the same time a singular celebration of what makes us all human. Read more . . .You're cordially invited to enter Kurt's View From My Window photo contest!

Hey friends, it's Kurt's first music video!
And watch for Antonio Ponti's other Passion World music videos, too. Parisian Heartbreak, an iTunes-only bonus track, features Kurt's lyric of hope and heartbreak on accordion virtuoso Richard Galliano's poignant tune.
Bonita Cuba features Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval on a new tune that came about during the Jazz Cruise. Kurt overheard Arturo playing a mournful melody and asked about it. Arturo said he was thinking about Cuba, his friends back home, and his parents who died in the US, not in their homeland. Kurt and Phil Galdston wrote the lyric and recorded it with Sandoval and his rhythm section just for Passion World.
Arturo Sandoval is a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, ten-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, and jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer extraordinaire.

Your Moment of Elling . . .
Romance is one of the things that most countries share, and I've noticed how different communities have their own ways of singing about love and heartbreak.
In chanson, the French teach us the value of nonchalance. In lyrics from Cuba or Latin America there is an overwrought, almost threatening response to a broken heart, while in Brazil they sing of the love that remains after the object of love has gone. They mix happiness and sadness together and call it saudade. In Italy or Germany, the lyrics reveal the kind of statuesque and heroic, almost operatic, nature of the broken heart.
