July-August 2014:  Celebrating the 4th & summer holidays

The Green Mill

Celebrate the 4th of July Weekend
with the Kurt Elling Quintet!

Kurt and his smokin' hot band, with Gary Versace on piano & Hammond B3 organ, Clark Sommers on bass, Bryan Carter on drums, and John McLean on guitar, come home to Chicago and the Green Mill for the 4th of July weekend!

The last time Kurt was at the Green Mill was in early January, so don't miss this rare opportunity to see him live and up close in his home club.

They'll create their own sonic fireworks with three sets of great jazz each night. Come on out and join the party!

Kurt's Summer Holidays

KE on vacation
As Kurt wrote in last month's newsletter,
After almost 20 years of touring every summer, I've elected to stay home with my family and enjoy their company. We'll be in Chicago for July and traveling together in August. You will still be able to follow me on Facebook and Instagram, but I'll be on a real break.
Come September 5th, Kurt and the band perform Elling Swings Sinatra at the University of Notre Dame, and then he's in the studio for the rest of the month to record, mix, and master his new recording, Passion World. In October, he's back out on tour. Please see his Touring page for all his confirmed gigs for the rest of 2014 and well into 2015.

79th DownBeat Readers Poll

Voting opens later in July in the 79th DownBeat Readers Poll!  To cast your vote, you don't even have to subscribe to DownBeat - just love jazz.

Kurt has topped the DownBeat Readers Poll 8 times before, including last year. He was also named Male Vocalist of the Year in the DownBeat Critics Poll for 14 straight years!

When Readers Poll voting opens in mid-July, you can vote on line, just as you are. Go to the DownBeat website and click on Vote! 79th Annual DownBeat Readers Poll.  Cast your jazz vote for as many of your favorites as you like in the various categories presented as well as for the DownBeat Hall of Fame.  You can skip any categories, and you can write in choices, too.

Voting closes in mid-August.

Sometime around mid-July, please check Kurt's Facebook fan page or the KE Forum to find out whether voting has officially opened.  Then please invite your jazz friends to join you and be sure to make your vote count again this year!

To bring the KEQ to a stage near you

Kurt is on the road about 180 nights a year. He only performs where he's been invited (by people who write checks!) and he doesn't get to set his own itinerary.

To hear Kurt and the band play in your city, region, or country, please ask your favorite jazz clubs or festivals to book them through Kurt's booking agency, IMN (International Music Network). Thank you!

Your Moment of Elling . . .

The goal is to attempt on a given night
to play a melody -
even if you're playing a composition
that you've played a hundred times before -
to find some sequence of notes
that you, as the individual artist,
and potentially no one
has ever played before.
