About their upcoming concerts, Kurt says, "Fred is an inspiring and challenging musical partner. It's always a pleasure to reconnect with him as we push one another into new musical spaces."

Dancing in the Street

Calling out around the world,
"Are you ready for a brand new beat?"
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancing in the street
They're dancing in Chicago
Down in New Orleans
In New York City...

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere...

On May 15, Kurt Elling guest stars with the Chicago Children's Choir in a very special concert,  Dancing in the Street - From the United States to South Africa: Songs on the Road of Freedom, at the Harris Street Theater at Millennium Park, 205 E Randolph Street, Chicago.

This concert features over 100 singers, ages 12-18, from the Chicago Children's Choir's top-tier Voice of Chicago ensemble; DiMension, a young male ensemble; and the Neighborhood Honors Choir, "exploring the pain of inequality, the struggle for justice, and the joy of freedom, through two lenses: the American Civil Rights Movement & the South African Anti-Apartheid Movement."

This special evening honors the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, enacted on July 2, 1964, celebrates South Africa's 20th year free from apartheid, and remembers the late Nelson Mandela. Kurt will be joined by his hot new band, this time with Gary Versace on piano and Christian Euman on drums.

The Chicago Children's Choir and the Harris Theater are offering a SPECIAL DISCOUNT for Kurt's fans! Use promo code CCCKURT to SAVE 10% on all tickets.

Dancing in the Street

The song "Dancing in the Street" has a very interesting history reflecting the turbulent times of the 1960s.

As Cord Jefferson reported on NPR in 2013:
Released in the summer of 1964, "Dancing in the Street," by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, emerged at an explosive time in American history. John F. Kennedy had been killed the year before. The U.S. was on the brink of major combat in Vietnam. Racial tensions continued burning hot in the Deep South, and "race riots" were causing chaos in urban areas from coast to coast.

...According to Martha Reeves and the Motown staffers who wrote "Dancing in the Street," the song was little more than a party anthem, a nice ditty about celebrating wherever one feels.

To others, however, "Dancing in the Street" was understood to be a protest song about airing one's grievances in the middle of America's large and unequal metropolises: "Philadelphia P-A / Baltimore and D.C. now / Can't forget the Motor City ..."

Civil rights activists began playing "Dancing in the Street" at rallies before they spoke to excite their audiences. In 1965, following another summer of urban racial clashes, an article in the black activist magazine Liberator read, "We are coming up! And it's reflected in the riot-song that symbolized Harlem, Philly, Brooklyn." The song to which Liberator was referring, of course, was "Dancing in the Street."

It wasn't long before reporters were asking Martha Reeves if her tune was "a call to arms," a query that would bring Reeves to tears. Reeves was deeply saddened by the idea that her music was ever associated with violence, righteous or not.
For more on this fascinating story, please see Dancing in the Street: Detroit's Radical Anthem, by Rollo Romig, The New Yorker, July 22, 2013.

And check out The Mix: Songs Inspired By The Civil Rights Movement, by Michele Norris, NPR Music, July 9, 2013.

Kurt is on the road about 180 nights a year. He only performs where he's been invited (by people who write checks!) and he doesn't get to set his own itinerary.

To hear Kurt and the band play in your city, region, or country, please ask your favorite jazz clubs or festivals to book them through Kurt's booking agency, IMN (International Music Network). Thank you!

Your Moment of Elling . . .

For me, jazz is all about
the freedom
and joy
and risk of new music
coming into the world
via improvisation
coupled with a craftman's discipline
and a prophet's vision.
