October 2013:  Falling leaves & autumn serenades

Central Park in autumn
Kurt's Fall Preview
October & November

Morning mists. Shorter days.
Golden leaves. Brisk chill air.
Crisp ripe apples.
And bright orange pumpkins.
The abundance of autumn
blesses us again.

On the 19th, the evening of October's full moon (Hunter's Moon or Moon of the Changing Season), the Kurt Elling Quintet performs at Dominican University in River Forest, IL.

Then they travel to the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts for a show at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, MA on October 23.

On October 24-26, Kurt and the band return to Birdland, "The Jazz Corner of the World," his home club in New York, in the heart of Manhattan. They play  six shows - two each night at 8:30 and 11:00 pm.

November finds the Kurt Elling Quintet in Ontario, Canada for two shows. On November 14, they play at The Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ontario. Then on November 15 they perform at the Brock University Centre for the Arts in St. Catharines, Ontario. This show is one of Brock University's Hot Ticket events this season.

On November 23, Kurt performs with the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in legendary soprano Renée Fleming's American Voices.

This very special program features guest vocalists from a variety of musical genres, including jazz veterans Kurt Elling and Dianne Reeves, Broadway sensations Sutton Foster and Norm Lewis, gospel diva Kim Burrell, pop star Josh Groban, country/bluegrass star Alison Krauss, and opera singer Eric Owens.

Kurt on RTÉ lyric fm Radio

KE with the RTE Concert Orchestra In May Kurt performed in Dublin with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and Big Band, conducted by composer and arranger Brian Byrne, the RTÉ Orchestra's first Artist in Residence. Laurence Hobgood, Clark Sommers, and John McLean also joined Kurt for this concert.

Recently, RTÉ lyric fm's "Jazz Alley" broadcast the one-hour abridged concert, and it's now available for listening on demand in their programme archives throughout the month of October.

Set list: Molly Malonokee (instrumental mash-up of Molly Malone & Cherokee!), Nightmoves, Tight, Tutti for Cootie, Steppin' Out, Nature Boy, and the encore that brought the audience to their feet, Raglan Road.

Check it out here.  Please be aware that when you click the Listen button, it will seem like nothing is happening for at least 30 seconds. The RTÉ Radio Player takes awhile to load. Be patient!  It's well worth the wait.

Also on RTÉ lyric fm, Kurt was Aedín Gormley's guest on "The Lyric Feature - My Tunes" on April 19, 2013. She asked him to select, listen to, and discuss a number of music pieces that hold a special meaning for him. You can listen to their excellent, in-depth conversation here.

For details about both of these archived programmes, please see this topic in the KE Forum.

 Marian McPartland - Piano Jazz

Remembering Marian McPartland (1918-2013)

Jazz pianist and long-time host of NPR's "Piano Jazz," Marian McPartland died peacefully of natural causes on Tuesday, August 20, surrounded by family and friends. She was 95.

Marian was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2000, received a lifetime achievement Grammy Award in 2004, was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007, and was made a member of the Order of the British Empire in 2010.  She had an amazing life and career, spanning styles from Dixieland to post-bop, and she continued playing almost to the end.

Jazz critic Nat Hentoff wrote in a 2008 article for the Wall Street Journal, "Her music...portrays a fullness of piano mastery that gives her a secure scope for her improvising...she shows that the jazz pulse and luminous beauty are not antithetical."

Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz began in 1978.  Over the years, she hosted almost 800 of the world's top musicians for improvisation and informal conversation on NPR's longest-running jazz program.

KE & Marian McPartland Kurt was Marian's guest on Piano Jazz in 2002.  You can listen to it  here.

Kurt says, "I am very proud to have had some small time with this jazz giant. Marian was an example to everyone when it came to both professional musicianship and personal kindness."

Laurence Hobgood joined Marian at the twin pianos for his 2007 Piano Jazz session, which you can listen to here.

Laurence reflects, "Marian was amazing in so many ways -- a great, swinging player; a living embodiment of jazz history; and a truly wonderful character with the kind of spirit that survives the body's tenure. She'll be missed indeed."

Kurt and Laurence also performed "All Is Quiet," in a soaring performance that ends in a whisper, at the Piano Jazz 30th anniversary concert at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in Lincoln Center.

Requiescat in pace et in amore, Marian!

To bring the KEQ to a stage near you

Kurt is on the road upwards of 180 nights a year. He only performs where he's been invited (by people who write checks!) and he doesn't get to set his own itinerary.

To hear Kurt and the band play in your city, region, or country, please ask your favorite jazz clubs or festivals to book them through Kurt's booking agency, IMN

(International Music Network). Thank you!

Your Moment of Elling . . .

The daily discipline
that it takes
to see the world
with fresh eyes
and to try to apprehend
everything
that's coming to you
as a potential gift:
there's poetry in that.
Poetry invites us
to dream ourselves awake -
to share a vision.
