Kurt Swings through August
Kurt Elling canta en
Tónica: Encuentro Internacional de Jazz en Jalisco
On August 5, the Kurt Elling Quintet performs at Tónica: International Meeting of Jazz at 8:30 pm at Teatro Degollado, Guadalajara, México.
Kurt also gives a Keynote talk on Sunday, August 4 at 1:30 pm at Salón Eugenio Toussaint in the Expo GDL in Guadalajara.
This is Kurt's first visit to México since performing in Cabo San Lucas in 2004.
This year Tónica presents a series of concerts, educational events, and professional dialogues from August 2 through 11 throughout Guadalajara.
In the past few years, the Tónica International Jazz Series has gained recognition throughout the country for presenting jazz and popular contemporary music. Tónica has positioned itself as the most complete and important jazz series in Latin America.
With a program that mixes the best exponents of international and national jazz and invites the public to attend showcase concerts with international stars, educational forums and concerts, local jazz and blues shows, and more, the Tónica International Meeting of Jazz promises that August will be an unforgettable month for music lovers. #EncuentroDeJazzJalisco

Then on August 16, the Kurt Elling Quintet returns to the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, MA for an 8:00 pm show as part of the Rockport Jazz Festival.
This intimate concert hall overlooking the Atlantic Ocean opened in June 2010. Its superb acoustics and spectacular views make it a very special place to hear live music.
In September Kurt performs with the Metropole Orkest at Musikfest Bremen in Germany and with the Bundesjazzorchester in Berlin to celebrate their 25th anniversary. He also joins other jazz stars for the Thelonious Monk Institute's International Jazz Saxophone Competition Finals & All-Star Gala Concert in Washington, DC. For all the details, please see AUGUST-OCTOBER Gigs below.
Kurt's taking some time this summer to write his next recording and work on several other projects that had to wait while he was touring so intensively during the first half of 2013. He's been hitting the road very hard, and it's time to be home with his family for awhile.
Kurt's touring schedule picks up again later in the fall, after he's finished prepping for the next round. Come on out and see him whenever you can. As always, thanks for your support!

Your Moment of Elling . . .
I get to deal as a jazz musician in a realm of improvisation and interaction -- interaction with the other musicians, interaction with the tradition of music that's very demanding and unforgiving if you don't stay with it and practice all the time. Those are all things that appeal to me. A big enough challenge. A high enough mountain. Something that's so much greater than me that I will never reach the other side of it, but that is a worthy thing to attempt nevertheless.
