Kurt's taking some time this summer to write his next recording and work on several other projects that had to wait while he was touring so intensively during the first half of 2013. He's been hitting the road very hard, and it's time to be home for awhile.
Kurt's touring schedule picks up again later in the fall, after he's finished prepping for the next round. Come on out and see him whenever you can. As always, thanks for your support.

Kurt Elling:
Male Vocalist of the Year
61st Annual DownBeat Critics Poll
Once again, the critics have chosen Kurt Elling as the top male vocalist in the 61th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll!
Kurt has been named the DownBeat Critics Poll Male Vocalist of the Year for fourteen consecutive years, from 2000 through 2013, and he was also awarded Talent Deserving Wider Recognition the preceding four years, from 1997 to 2000. DownBeat publisher Frank Alkyer remarked,
The DownBeat Critics Poll represents a dedication to the improvised music community that you will find nowhere else in print or online. We have 165 critics taking considerable time and effort to vote in the poll, and we thank each and every one for those contributions. The results are not just about the winners; they're also about recognizing established and up-and-coming artists from all over the globe. We're very proud to publish the names of more than 1,000 artists in this year's poll results. It's a list that offers a very comprehensive snapshot of what's happening musically in 2013. The complete 2013 DownBeat Critics Poll results are here. They will be also published in the August issue of DownBeat, available on newsstands on July 16.
Congratulations to all of the 2013 winners, and especially to Kurt!
Coming up later in July:
Cast your jazz votes in the 78th DownBeat Readers Poll! Information and polling dates will be posted on the DownBeat website and in Kurt's Forum. Tell your jazz-loving friends, and let's get out the vote!

Laurence Hobgood, piano

Watch the video on RTV Slovenia here.
It's 46:58 long, after a 15-second commercial.
This concert marked a triple anniversary: the birth and death of singer Johnny Hartman (1923-83) and the release of the legendary jazz record John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman (1963), reimagined in Kurt's 2009 Grammy-winning album, Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman. Michael Abene wrote a new arrangement of You Are Too Beautiful just for this concert.
That Obscure Hurt
Featuring Kurt Elling & Janie Dee
Composed by Guy Barker
Lyrics and narration by Robert Ryan
Inspired by Benjamin Britten June 12, 2013
Benjamin Britten wrote two operas based on ghost stories by Henry James. In a BBC Radio 3 and Aldeburgh music co-commission in Britten's centenary year, jazz trumpeter and composer Guy Barker worked with author Robert Ryan to complete this trilogy with this new work, That Obscure Hurt. Adapting the Henry James short story The Jolly Corner, Barker's work for orchestra and jazz orchestra incorporates both jazz and echoes of Britten's operas to create a 70-minute-long suite. Louise Fryer presents BBC 3's live concert from Snape Maltings at the 2013 Aldeburgh Festival where the BBC Concert Orchestra join forces with the Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra, jazz vocalist Kurt Elling, and actress Janie Dee in the premiere of That Obscure Hurt.
Robert Ryan's Programme Guide for That Obscure Hurt is here.

All of Kurt's upcoming gigs in 2013 and into 2014 are on the Touring page on his website. That's where you'll always find the most current information. Check there often, as new dates are always being added.
To bring the KEQ to a stage near you Kurt is on the road upwards of 180 nights a year. He only performs where he's been invited (by people who write checks!) and he doesn't get to set his own itinerary. To hear Kurt and the band play in your city, region, or country, please ask your favorite jazz clubs or festivals to book them through Kurt's booking agency, IMN (International Music Network). Thank you!

Your Moment of Elling . . .
I always want to be surprising the audience and giving them something that they won't have had the chance to hear on any of my records. I really want to reward them and give them a reason or two for coming out. I want people to come out of my shows overwhelmed -- emotionally, intellectually -- because I want to keep doing this.
