May 2013:  Jazz in Bloom

Europe
is abloom with jazz!

Tulips in bloom
This month the Kurt Elling Quintet plays three nights in Norway - at Mai:Jazz in Stavanger, the Trondheim Jazz Festival in Trondheim, and at Nasjonal Jazzscene in Oslo.

Then they travel to Denmark for two nights, first at the Copenhagen Jazzhouse and then the Horsens Ny Teater in Horsens.

Next up is the Netherlands, with a show at the Jazz Festival Middelburg and then two free concerts at Jazz in Duketown in Den Bosch.

The Quartet joins forces with with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra for a concert at The National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland.

In Dublin Kurt's working with composer and arranger Brian Byrne, who's arranging two new pieces for this concert - a short poem by James Joyce ("Dear Heart, Why Will You Use Me So?") and another surprise chart just for Kurt's Dublin fans.  Byrne is the RTÉ Concert Orchestra's first Artist-in-Residence.

Then Kurt and Laurence perform with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg at the beautiful Philharmonie Luxembourg with its exceptional architecture and its impressive acoustics.

Kurt and Laurence finish their European trip in Ljubljana, Slovenia with the Big Band RTV Slovenija, conducted by Michael Abene.

The Slovenia concert celebrates a triple anniversary - the birth and death of singer Johnny Hartman (1923-1983) and the release of the legendary John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman album in 1963. Kurt was awarded the Grammy in 2010 for Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings Coltrane and Hartman, his reimagined version of this classic album. For this concert, Michael Abene has written a brand new arrangement for "You Are Too Beautiful." This is Kurt's first visit to Slovenia.

The Kurt Elling Quintet at Ronnie Scott's

In April, Kurt and the band were in residence for six nights at the famed Ronnie Scott's
in Soho, London, where they played eight SOLD OUT shows to very enthusiastic audiences.

The reviewers were equally enthusiastic:
Kurt Elling is unmistakably a jazz singer; his subtle shifts of accent and time transform the most mundane lyrics into narratives steeped in the human condition....Elling's transformative powers are centred on a pitch-perfect tenor, clear diction and pinpoint timing....But most important, Elling is completely at one with his band.  ~ Mike Hobart, The Financial Times

Listening to Elling is a masterclass on how to make voice, words, melody and microphone work together to fix an atmosphere. The voice itself is astonishing....Elling made it soar up at the end of I like the Sunrise, holding a high trumpet-like note for what seemed an eternity.  ~ Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph

Starting with one of his signature songs, "My Foolish Heart", Elling showed us the boundless possibilities that exist when the full palette of the bona fide jazz singer is in play. Interpolating the Victor Young/Ned Washington standard with a sung poem ("The Moon Was Once a Moth") by 8th century Sufi saint, Rabi'a of Basra, the central part of this triptych ended with a hypnotically repeating phrase ("and again") that rose ever higher until it evaporated right at the top of Elling's four-octave range, before we returned to the standard's welcoming embrace....Last night we got to hear jazz singing at its virtuosic, life-affirming, risk-taking best.  ~ Peter Quinn, The Arts Desk

A singer of astonishing technique and meticulous craft, [Elling] has the poetic imagination to turn coy tunes into sinister ones, or torch-song heartaches into raw-nerve nightmares, as well as the jazz skills to improvise with the exultant freedom of a post-Coltrane sax player....A jazz singer to the core, Elling is a charismatic ambassador for the music wherever he goes.  ~ John Fordham, The Guardian

  Eighth notes Short Takes

Did you catch Kurt's interview on the Jamie Cullum BBC Radio 2 programme in March? You can still listen to the podcast. After swapping stories and spinning songs, Kurt and Jamie do a rousing duet on "I'm Satisfied," accompanied by Laurence Hobgood. Listen here.

In April, Laurence Hobgood was Jon Weber's guest on NPR's Piano Jazz. Laurence played some recent originals and also did duets with Jon Weber on his own "Beyond Words" and Dave Brubeck's classic "In Your Own Sweet Way." Listen here. Laurence's  earlier appearance on Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland in 2007 is here.

In April, Kendrick Scott was featured in John Murph's DownBeat article, "Scott's Percussive Prophecy," discussing the name of his group, Oracle, and his approaches to drumming and composing. Check it out here.

Drummer Quincy Davis has been playing with the KEQ
on occasion since last summer. Here he talks about working with Kurt.

In June Kurt is featured in Guy Barker's That Obscure Hurt, a new suite for jazz & symphony orchestras, based on a Henry James ghost story.  In July the KEQ returns to Europe with shows in the Netherlands, Romania, Italy, Germany, and Belgium.

All of Kurt's upcoming gigs in 2013 and the first half of 2014 are on the Touring page on his website. That's where you'll always find the most current information. Check there often, as new dates are always being added.

To bring the KEQ to a stage near you

Kurt and Laurence are on the road about 180 nights a year. They only perform where they've been invited (by people who write checks!) and they don't get to set their own itinerary.

To hear Kurt and the band play in your city, region, or country, please ask your favorite jazz clubs or festivals to book them through Kurt's booking agency, IMN, (International Music Network). Thank you!

Your Moment of Elling . . .

Our fullness is mirrored in our art.
Develop yourself as you would your art.
Be HERE now.
Tragedies can make us stronger not weaker.
We try to understand by wedding
our intuitive side to our intellect.
The chief task of the artist
is to create
further
mystery.
