November 2012: 1619 BROADWAY Goes to Europe
|
|
Kurt's tenth album, 1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project, features renditions of classic songs associated with the world-famous Brill Building. Since its release on September 25, 1619 Broadway has seen enthusiastic reviews from jazz writers and fans alike! "Elling has an extraordinary vocal technique, a profound love of jazz, and the ability to find feelings in his own experience to dramatise every song: a kind of method-singing. This is a very fine album indeed." ~ London Jazz
"...there are versions of Sam Cooke's 'You Send Me,' Carole King's 'So Far Away' and Paul Simon's 'An American Tune' that will go down as some of the finest ballad interpretations this awesomely equipped vocalist has ever recorded." ~ The Guardian (UK)
"...as is so often the case with Mr. Elling, the artistry lies in some intangible harmony of musical arrangement, interpretive detail and sheer vocal expression...what works best here works gorgeously: 'So Far Away,' and a stealthily creeping 'I Only Have Eyes for You,' and especially the stark reading of Paul Simon's 'American Tune' that now stands as one of Mr. Elling's purest and most restrained performances." ~ The New York Times
"Jazz vocalist Kurt Elling's 1619 Broadway: The Brill Building Project makes real the notion 'it's the singer, not the song,' with his tribute to the studios where some of the most popular American tunes were written." ~ Christian Science Monitor
"A smart and daring listening experience." ~Audiophile Audition Kurt's fans are sharing their delight in the Forum on Kurt's website and on his Facebook page. Please give us a shout and let us know what you think! And please add your voice to the customer comments on Amazon and iTunes, too.

The Critics Poll winners were announced earlier.
"This is the most comprehensive Readers Poll in our history," said Frank Alkyer, DownBeat publisher. "In an election year, everybody wants to get out the vote, including DownBeat. We had 17,242 jazz fans cast ballots, which is more than double the voters we had last year."

Short Takes
In recent 1619 Broadway shows, Kurt has read a fine passage from Langston Hughes' 1956 essay, " Jazz as Communication." Here's a small taste:
Life is as hard on Broadway as it is in Blues-originating-land. The Brill Building Blues is just as hungry as the Mississippi Levee Blues. One communicates to the other, brother!
Kurt and Jon Hendricks performed "What a Wonderful World" together at the 2012 What a Wonderful World Awards ceremony in New York. Hendricks was honored as one of four distinguished recipients of the 2012 Award given annually by the Louis Armstrong Center for Music & Medicine and the Beth Israel Medical Center. Kudos to Jon!
