SoMi Tileworks
Kirsten Walstead
Minneapolis, Minnesota

SoMi Tileworks opened its 1,700 ft studio and showroom on the ground level of the Northrup King Building, located in NE Minneapolis, the "best arts district in America" according to a USA Today poll, March 2015.

Kirsten Walstead is a second generation potter and owner of SoMi who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design from Kansas State University.  Her signature styles are high relief forms and tiles with custom words.  (See fireplace below.)

SoMi's tiles are all handmade from a coarse white stoneware clay which makes them suitable for indoor and outdoor installations.
The raw ingredients are sourced from locally owned and operated businesses in Minneapolis.  To see the process of creating a custom made, multi-tile design, click here.

Native Tile & Ceramics
Diane Mausser
Torrance, California

Native Tile & Ceramics will celebrate it's 25th Anniversary at the end of 2015. A lot has happened since opening it's doors in October of 1990.

Native Tile still remains small, but mighty, as they create tiles for jobs of any size and complexity. Their inspiration remains rooted in the historic tile companies that thrived in California in the 1920s through 1940s.  Over the years the Native Tile catalog has expanded (pdf) to include quite a few patterns of their own design.

The fountain above is one of many Native Tile installations on this historic Spanish Revival property built in 1930. The clients appreciate and collect antiques from the period of their home so it was important that the tile look and feel like it was part of the original construction. This home was one of many special properties that was included in Douglas Woods' book entitled The California Casa published by Rizzoli (see pages 228-235). Photograph by Edmund Barr.

The relief tiles shown here were designed and carved by Diana. Each pattern tells the story of the couple who own the home. The style was originally inspired by the historic Batchelder Tile Company but was given a more contemporary color palette and an ocean them, to tie the different scenes together.   Photograph by Edmund Barr.

Native Tile & Ceramics founder Diana Mausser has been associated with the Historic Adamson House for over 25 years. Diana served on the Board of Directors for 10 years and currently sits on the Advisory Board. She designed and created the main entry sign for the Adamson House as well as the self-guided tour signage that flows throughout the property. She also redesigned the new Adamson House Web site.

Errata from 10/14:  Last year we gave the wrong link to the 10-year anniversary celebration catalog of the Southern California Chapter of the Institute Classical Architects & Art.  Native Tile is included in this catalog.  For more information, contact:
