Hohn & Hohn, Inc.
Jan Hohn
St Paul, Minnesota

Simply put, Jan Hohn is passionate about tile. With 23 years of experience in the industry, she has a thorough understanding of what a quality installation requires above, and below, the tiled surface. Her technical expertise, honed skills and artisan eye for detail have helped Jan become a leader in her field, and she loves to share this passion with her clients.

Jan is highly sought-after as an installer of handmade tile. Handmade installations present specific challenges, both in design and implementation, and are often individually crafted to suit her client's desires.  Click here to see finished bathrooms, kitchens and hearths

For example, handmade tile has completely transformed what was once a typical 5' x 8' suburban bathroom, above. All of the tiles were individually created to fit the space, and the arch was added to the tub surround, per the client's request.

The floor tiles were randomly set, showcasing the five vivid colors, creating a truly one-of-a-kind bathroom floor.

Jan both designed and installed the hearth pictured above. Here, handmade tile replaced her client's mundane black granite fireplace surround. The tile was designed to tie into the room and its furnishings. This hearth showcases the versatility of handmade tile, as in the 1" x 1" squares that are used to border the firebox and in the clipped corner accents. Of course, the center Art Deco piece is icing on the cake!

Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, Hohn & Hohn, Inc. is an award-winning custom tile and stone contractor with more than 85 years of combined experience. Jan's three employees all share her artistic vision, skill and appreciation for the inherent opportunities presented by handmade tile. Beyond both machine made and handmade tile installations, Hohn and Hohn, Inc. offers project design and consultation services, and also specializes in antique tile and stone restoration.

Arts & Crafts multi-number tile installation
Individual number tiles come in three standard sizes: 4 inch, 5 inch and 6 inch. The hand-cut numbers are in an Arts & Craft font which is based on work by Dard Hunter while at the Roycroft in New York. Matte green is the standard color although many other colors are available for order. Number tiles come with brass screws and rubber washers for mounting. Custom sizes, font choices and multi-number plaques are available.

Martha Coursey
Atlanta, Georgia

Martha Coursey received a Master in Mosaics from Orsoni Mosaic School. "Lobster" mural 24 x 18 inches
This lobster mural was installed in a backsplash under a range hood as a striking focal point.  Click here to see the installation.
"Whimsical Fish" mural 24 x 18 inches plus top border
Martha's website is a virtual goldmine of mural art.  For the sportsman, there are birds in the field, in trees and in water, fly-fishing and fish of all types, wolf, bear and elk.  For the Old World lover, there are images of English birds and animals, old-time golfers and hunting scenes and images of old Provence.

The brightly colored Whimsical Fish are in a section called "Marine Series.  Note how border tiles are included in most of the groupings, making it easy to mix and match tiles to fit any layout scheme.

Martha has a second website, Mosaic Tile Works, with images of installations, as well as smaller mosaics that are available for purchase.  The Installations page has several projects that invite the eye to linger, especially the room with the landscape window made completely out of tile.  Anything seems possible after seeing these completed projects.

House on the Hill's tiles are available on ceramic with a choice of backgrounds: white, bisque or bone. They are also available on handmade or commercial grade tile, or on tumbled marble. The designs may also be put on customer-supplied tiles.  House on the Hill can work with you to match colors; they can also modify these designs to fit your needs. Finally, House on the Hill Studio is always available for custom designs.
