The Handmade Tile Association Board met on January 29th and discussed planning and goal setting for the coming years.
Since HTA will not be hosting the tile festival there was a discussion regarding how the organizations financial resources would be utilized to promote the mission of the organization. The emphasis will be in providing helpful tools for tile makers to promote the use of handmade tile. Trebuchet Communications will be producing information post cards. Discussion included: 1) how to distribute the directory to more locations; 2) how to create more tools for artisan members to use in their studios and shows and 3) to continue to recognize that we are a national tile organization with a presence at more tile events (with out actually producing them).
The HTA Board decided it is important that we have more input from the membership so we can make the best decisions moving forward. We set April 2nd as the date for the next membership meeting.  Location to be announced.

TADA Magazine looking for Handmade Tile

Lesley Goddin
Lesley A. Goddin
Editor of TileLetter Magazine and TADA Magazine: Tile for Architects, Designers and Affiliates has asked our Handmade Tile Association members to send her press releases on new products that include studio or artist websites, information about the products, and a 1500 pixel-wide image of the product. It would be helpful to receive these by
February 14. This is a great opportunity to get in front of Architects and Designers.  TADA magazine wants to help their audience understand handmade tile better so they can utilize handmade tiles more often.

In the Tile Studio

Many people who follow handmade tile are fascinated by how we make our work.  Collectors and people who commission tile work love to know how tiles are made. Here is a description we liked that was featured on North Prairie Tileworks Facebook page. Check it out!

Gas Kiln at North Prairie Tileworks
What goes on inside the North Prairie Tileworks gas kiln does not stop
melted cones
there but continues to be closely watched when the heat is turned off. The photo shows the glazed tiles organized on shelves outside the kiln, ready to be rolled in. About 84 hours later (and over 2350 degree Fahrenheit of heat at its peak) the tiles emerge in their final form. How we know when to turn off the gas?  It is determined by sight, confirming when the specific pyrometric cones bend. These special ceramic indicators bend at prescribed points through the combination of time and temperature to foretell the mysteries inside the kiln. Tilemakers never get tired of opening the kiln to see what has gone on inside. Click here to see more photos.
Spotlight on Artist New Writer
Chris Madsen, a past WARM protegee
Chris Madsen was hired to be the new writer and interviewer for the Spotlight on Artist feature. Chris was this years' copy editor for the HTA Directory. She has been working at Clay Squared for two years and has been learning all about handmade tile. Chris is a polymer clay artist as well. She is fascinated by all of the tile makers work and she has great command of the English language, making the Spotlight even better.

Chris has already started contacting artists for next months feature to get your info and new images to help tell your story. On the right side bar of each newsletter you can see what month you are featured.  Help her make your tile take center stage by getting her your best images and inspiring info about how your work. She will do the rest.

Distribution of Directory

2014 HTA Directory
10,000 directories arrived at the HTA office the first week of January. Over 5000 have been distributed! 2300 directories were direct-mailed in early January to our mailing list. Deb LeAir came to the HTA office and packed up 3000 directories and mailed them to our members to distribute. Most members received a starter pack of 50. Stephanie Kaczrowski and Alex Chin distributed over 400 directories to a dozen local businesses, including an art center, clay distributors, showrooms, galleries and design firms. Thank you Deb, Stephanie and Alex!

This year we have a list of events, below, where the Directory will be distributed but we are looking for even more.
If you're going to be at any of these events and can help distribute, please let us know.

(We need a point person to make sure Grove Park is covered.)
Coverings - - April -29th May 2nd
Moravian Tile Festival - May 17th and 18th
Art A Whirl - May 16- 18th
Silver City Clay Festival July 30th - August 3rd

If you know of other events that you can help distribute the directories to, please contact Josh and he will get you all the directories you need.
Thank You Advertisers and Members!!!
Thank you to all the advertisers and members for being part of the 2014 Handmade Tile Association Directory. With out you there would not be a Handmade Tile Association. The Directory started in 1999 and was a hit even before the first printing. People from around the country were contacting us asking for a copy. The Directory moved to a full color version in 2001 and was the first of its kind to showcase handmade tile artists this way. It has grown from a small band of 12 artists to showcasing over 60 businesses and artists. We distribute 10,000 directories annually all over the county. Thanks to you, the advertisers and members of HTA.  We could not have done it with out you!
Sincerely,
