Hand Carved Clay
Deb LeAir
St. Paul, Minnesota

For the past fifteen years I have been creating deeply carved botanical tiles for use in installation or framed for the wall.  In recent months, I have been exploring a new body of work that is graphic and playful. This new direction has allowed me to play with tile sizes, shapes and compositions.  Rather than being carved, these new tiles are rolled out and then impressed with a variety of tools to create lines and patterns.

The surface treatment of terra sigilatta (a refined clay slip) allows me to work with intense colors, yet maintain a matte surface.  A wash of black copper oxide accentuates line, makes the colors pop, and leaves a trace of textures. All tiles for installation are sealed for durability.

I will continue to work with the  carved botanical motifs as I explore this new line of work. I enjoy working with them both!

Pasadena Craftsman Tile
Cha-Rie Tang
Pasadena, California

Pasadena craftsman green kitchenDesigning your own kitchen can be one of the most rewarding things you do. A designer would be useful in guiding you through space and usage allocations, new product selections, and the complexities  of construction. The backsplash is where you can exercise your creativity and express your personality.

If you can provide the measurements and a description of what you like, Cha-Rie can design a tile layout  for you. She is an architect, interior designer, NKBA certified, most importantly she personally makes the tiles.

Looking through the galleries at www.pasadenacraftsmantile.com you can get a taste of what can be done. Looking through the catalogue you can spot specific decorative tiles you may want to include. You can also request special custom designs.
Cha-Rie also makes the plain field tiles at very competitive prices.  There is a wide range of rustic matte glazes to choose from. Since every piece is hand glazed, no two tiles are alike. You can request a tight color palette or a wide variation, a shift of the blend in one direction, or specify rough percentages of several different colors....
Cha-Rie works happily and humbly out of her home studio under the trellis, amongst flowers and by the koi pond. She welcomes customers, who may want a fireplace or a kitchen splash, to rummage through tiles on her outdoor granite tables and to work out designs particular to their needs and desires. No job is too big or too small. On the large side, she is doing a train station and a mural for a senior housing project; on the small side, she is supplying a tile store with a few decos. Visit her booth at the annual Pasadena Heritage Craftsman Expo, make an appointment to visit her studio, or send a request by email.

I love the idea of using art to personalize one of the most basic human needs - shelter. Handmade tiles have adorned buildings for more than 2,000 years, and the tiles I make help define our time in architectural history.
Ebb and Flow
Even a single tile can transform a space, and my work is so versatile that it can be used in endless ways. I'm always amazed by the arrangements people come up with, and I see each project as a collaboration between the artist and client.
Josh glazing Cosmic Tiles
Each tile in The Cosmic Collection can stand alone as a piece of art, but when these concepts are brought together in a mural, they completely transform a space. I take inspiration from the natural world, art, and my travels to create these one-of-a-kind installations. The separate pieces are glazed as a group, numbered, fired, then reassembled. Installed, these expressive works become irresistible gathering places.

Josh makes his tiles by hand using the same techniques and materials artisans have used for thousands of years, dating back to Egyptian times. Each tile is handled nine separate times before it becomes part of a customer's tile collection or home installation. Handcrafted from a special mix of terra cotta clay, Clay Squared to Infinity tile is exterior grade with a life expectancy of over 100 years.
