WRITING YOUR CHILD'S NAME
 Set the Example
Take note that we are not suggesting that you do handwriting drills with your children.  That would be a great way to help them dislike school.  But, when you do write their names, use upper case and lower case letters so they do not start doing it with all upper case and have to re-learn later.  Examples:
Casey, Hayden, Austin, Vicky, Sophia
FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear Parents,
It is a joy to reflect upon our past school year while I am still hearing the laughter of children playing at Summer Camp.  So many children blossomed as they learned and grew and made friends.  Children learned to be independent, to have conversations with adults and children, to resolve conflicts and to manage emotions.
It is also a joy to reflect on the work of Parents Group.  You held a yard sale to raise money for the Scholarship Fund, but also found ways to share in our community.  The letter from Cornerstones thanks you for your generosity. The family dining out nights raised money for the Scholarship Fund, but also provided us evenings of fun and fellowship.  The gifts of food for teacher meetings gave us inspiration, energy and love.
If this is your last newsletter, please keep in touch.  We love photo Christmas cards from alumni families!
For families coming back in September, join us at Playdates.  Play safely for the rest of the summer!

RETIREMENTS
Sally Baughman
Forty years ago, Sally began working at Child Development Center as our preschool was known then.  Hundreds of children have known her quiet, loving and caring nature.  Nothing is ever more important than the children in her class each school day.  In addition to her work as Assistant Teacher, she has helped out in countless ways around the Preschool, always using the phrase  "Whatever you need me to do."

Carmela Condro
Carmela has taught at Child Development Center and then United Christian Parish Preschool for 36 years.  She has helped hundreds of children gain the skills they needed to be successful in kindergarten and in life.  Teachers over the years have yearned to have Carmela's charisma--children follow her like a Pied Piper.  She leads them with love and they would sit in Circle Time and listen to her for hours if she asked.

Join Us on Sunday
On Sunday, June 7, Carmela's and Sally's service to the Preschool and our community will be honored at the 11 am worship service at United Christian Parish.  Pick up a sticker that says Preschool on your way into the buildinng, if you can join us.

Gifts

Parents have donated funds to purchase two trees for our playground in honor of these two great teachers.  If you missed the collection, send your check to the Preschool.

Usually when people retire from jobs, they receive gifts. BUT Carmela and Sally decided that they would give a gift to the school--a brand new train set with lots of track!  Teachers will think of them whenever they pull the box out of the closet.

MORE GOODBYES

Staff Changes

We are sad to announce that Patty Bohnenberger will not be returning to Preschool in the fall. After 8 years as a Lead Teacher, she is returning to elementary school teaching.  Her skills as a professional educator and her amazing capacity to love and care for every single child in her class have made a significant difference in many children's lives.

We have learned some helpful phrases in Conscious Discipline.  We used to say, "I'll miss you," but a much more affirming phrase that helps all of us work through goodbyes is "I will remember you." So let's all say to Mrs. Bohnenberger, Mrs. Condro and Mrs. Baughman, "We will remember you.  We will remember your smiles, your patience and your gifts to our little ones."

FAMILY SURVEY 14/15 RESULTS & OVERALL PROGRAM EVALUATION
Thanks for your participation!
The annual parent survey was distributed to families in April.  The survey was basically unchanged from the last several years.  The first two pages of the parent survey are the questions from the NAEYC Accreditation survey. The final page contained a few additional questions of interest to the Preschool and allowed parents space to write general comments.  For the short answer questions, the available responses were "Yes," "No," "Don't Know," and "N/A."
By June 1, 71 surveys had been completed and returned out of  114 distributed.  Overall, the results are very positive, with the overwhelming majority of the parents happy with the education and environment at Preschool.

The multiple choice questions received extremely positive responses.  The following questions were among those that received 99% or 100% Yes responses: 1. I have a good relationship with my child's teacher and other staff; 2. The teacher takes good care of my child, helps my child learn to get along with others, and is a good teacher; 27. Does your child appear happy and seem to enjoy coming to school?   These questions about relationships and learning especially reflect the values of the school, so the Yes responses were very gratifying to us.

Comments included many like the ones quoted below:

"The program is great, teachers are great. My child is not happy every time I have to tell her she doesn't have class. So she really enjoys coming to school and play with her teachers and classmates."

"The best preschool in VA. She is very happy to going to school every day and she learned a lot of things."

"My experience in working w/the teachers + admin staff this year has been exceptional. They have accommodated our special needs and gone above and beyond in helping us to make this preschool year an optimal + enjoyable experience!"

Several parents commented on how valuable the Conscious Discipline programs have been for them.  We will be offering these programs again next school year.

PAC and the Director consider survey results very carefully and make every effort to address all issues that are raised in the surveys.  Even though the number of negative comments was small, each one was discussed by the committee, and plans for improvement were made.

There were some negative responses and comments about less than adequate communication with families and we will continue to work on this.  Just as last year, less than 90% felt that the Preschool helps parents get to know and support each other or that they did not feel comfortable participating in school activities; we will work harder in this regard.  A few people answered No to the question about being provided a translator when needed.  We did provide translators for several families this year; please ask the office when you would like a translator for a meeting with a teacher.

There were several criticisms of the snow make-up announcements and days provided.  We realize that it was very hard for families to have schedules disrupted to the extent that they were this past winter.

Several parents did not realize that two written progress reports were sent to parents each year.  If you missed getting two reports, please call the office and we will get you a copy from the file.

Family and staff surveys are an important part of PAC's annual review of the Preschool.  Parents are also encouraged to send any concerns to first, the Director and next to PAC as issues arise, not waiting until next April's survey.  Parent suggestions and questions are always welcomed.

If you would like more detailed information than this summary provides, a copy of the full survey results is available in the Preschool office.

PRESCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Thanks to Parents Serving on PAC

Thanks to Alicia Narvaez and Julie Harris for their service over the past several years, especially the two Preschool parent members who are ending their committee membership. At the end of her 4 year term, Alicia, mom of first Santi, then Beni and now Maite Hernandez has shared her expertise as an early childhood consultant.  A special thanks to her for opening all those sealed envelopes and the surveys every spring.  Julie, a social worker valuable source of information to the committee, is leaving since daughters, Josie and Eliza will be going to kindergarten.  We will remember with great appreciation the wisdom they shared with the committee during discussions about many issues and their willingness to give of their time for the benefit of the school. The church will be appointing two new members before August.

We are pleased that the third parent member, Jen Flora will be continuing next year.  We are grateful for the continuity and experience.

Please Consider Serving on PAC
The Preschool Advisory Committee is made up of four members of United Christian Parish and three parents. Two new parent members are needed! Membership involves one meeting each month on the first Wednesday of the month from 7:30 to 9 pm. and a few occasional responsibilities.  When PAC members contribute their expertise in the fields of business, education, health, law, management, administration, etc. the school benefits.  Please volunteer or suggest another parent we should recruit.  Reply to this e-mail or call the Preschool office if you are interested.
