First Steps in Becoming a Professional Musician
I was asked to speak at a career fair. At first I said "no, thanks." I’ve never done public speaking before but I thought about it. It would be a new challenge for me and if can guide some young kid who may be thinking about becoming a musician in the right direction at an early age and save them some of the hardship, it would be worth it. If I could guide him in the way so that he may not encounter those hardships by making bad decisions, again it would be worth it. You see, bad decisions make it harder for you to achieve your goals. I’m only going to speak from life experiences. I don’t think there’s a cookie cut advice that can be given to someone that fits all, but there are some things that must be put in place first; if you want to become a professional musician.
I knew from the age of six that I wanted to be musician and I spent my whole life working and studying toward that goal. Staying focus, knowing where you are going and who you are, is very important! Most of all, being honest to yourself is the key. I know this sounds crazy but a lot people don’t really know themselves. Some folks have false beliefs. Just because you want to become a musician doesn’t mean you have what it takes to be one. Everybody doesn’t have that flame inside of thm. You know that burning desire to be a “professional”. Some might have that desire, but not the ability. When you’re starting out young you got to keep your priorities in place. Another thing, keep your life simple. In other words, don’t put yourself in a position where you can’t continue your quest. By that I mean; stay out of debt, don’t live over your means, hold back on planning a family life until you become that professional you desire to be. You don’t need that extra distraction. Learn to listen to people who have been there and have accomplished the goals you are trying to reach. watch what you put in your body. Stay Healthy this where a lot people make their mistake not taking care of their health, your body is your temple, everything stem from your temple.
Education is the key this is where you start. That’s where you get your tools, your foundation, your social life, communication skills and how to swim with sharks. You notice I didn’t say how to play. You have to develop that. That’s a whole different type of education. In today’s world...make sure your curriculum can support each other. Be a diver! Have more than one thing going for you.
You got to live and breathe music 24/7! If you’re looking for millions of dollars right away, don’t go into music. But if you’re willing to stay in it for the long haul, willing to put in 10,000 hours or more practicing, a life time of studying, sometime sleeping in vans, working for less than minimum wages and sometimes no wages at all, doing what it takes to get by. Long periods of time living on the road! But if you innovated, willing to live on the edge, bold and have the passion for what you’re doing...you can have a fruitful career in music. Music can be rewarding Remember a lot of people are called, but only few make it! And always try to live by God’s law, Man’s law and follow the Rules of life. Did I?–well I tried.
