Two Dogs Left to Starve Now Safe at KHS
Sky (left) and Klaus (right) when they reached KHS

Eight-month-old Sky and five-month-old Klaus were chained and left to die in Letcher County, Kentucky when their owners moved out. They were there for two weeks without food before anyone found them. Thankfully, an animal control officer brought them to the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter in Hazard, where they were fed puppy chow for two weeks to help them recover and gain weight.

On Monday, August 29, they came to the Kentucky Humane Society in Louisville. These photos are from the day they came to KHS. We cannot imagine the shape these puppies were in when they were found. Despite the cruelty they experienced in the hands of humans, both dogs are very sweet and love receiving attention - and treats - from our staff. They will need a few weeks in foster care to gain weight and to learn that people are good before they are ready for loving, forever homes.

Donations are appreciated. KHS is a private nonprofit and depends on donations to care for needy animals. Give online.

Thank You, Petco Foundation, for Helping Foster Pets

We want to say a big "THANK YOU" to the Petco Foundation for their support of our foster program! With their financial assistance, we expect over 1,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will spend time in foster care over the next year before they are ready for adoption. Our Foster Program is critically important to little ones such as puppies and kittens too young to be adopted as well as dogs and cats recovering from illness or injuries. We are honored to receive this grant to extend our lifesaving efforts and to serve the Petco Foundation's mission to raise the quality of life for pets and people who love and need them.

Does your dog have what it takes to be a Canine Good Citizen?

Our 4-week CGC Prep class (starting September 14) will help you put the final polish on your pup's manners before you take the Canine Good Citizen test with an AKC approved CGC evaluator. Dogs that successfully complete the test will earn an AKC title and a certificate from the American Kennel Club acknowledging their achievement. This is a great step towards any advanced training goals, such as therapy work or agility, or just to validate that your dog is the smartest pooch on the block. Dogs attending must complete Manners for Life or equivalent training class before enrolling. Enroll today!

Chili's Grill & Bar has chosen the Kentucky Humane Society as its Give Back Program recipient for September. That means if you show your server the image on this post, Chili's will donate 15% of your meal price to KHS. It's all local Chili's. So enjoy and help us at the same time. Thanks!

Feeders Supply Pet of the Month

Violet is a one-year-old Coonhound mix looking for an active family who will play with her and take her on lots of walks. She is an adventurous girl who would make a great running and hiking partner. She would do best if she met any potential dog siblings before going home with a new family because she is playful. She is a big, goofy girl who wants everyone to be her best friend. Does she sound like the happy-go-lucky pup for you? She is spayed, micro-chipped and up-to-date on all vaccinations. Come meet her at our adoption center in the Pewee Valley Feeders Supply, 12406 La Grange Road in Louisville.
