Loopy for Loquats: Neighborhood Pick - THIS AM!

Camp Glen Green

2556 Glen Green Street

(Sorry for the late notice!)

Did you hear? We're loopy for loquats! And these delicate fruits are ripening quickly in this warm April sun. We're predicting they'll be at their peak at the end of April, so let's get together and harvest this crop before it's too late.

Please join us for a Loquat Quick Pick on Saturday, April 30! We'll be harvesting neighborhood loquats, cleaning and processing them, and turning a portion into salsa. The majority of the harvest will be donated to A Place Called Home. As an added bonus, our beloved Chef Minh Phan will be doing a cooking demo with the families of A Place Called Home when we deliver the fruit. Join us for our loquat harvest and you'll be helping to improve our LA community.

We'll need some hands to help pick the fruit, and A LOT of hands to process it. The loquat, commonly called Japanese plum, is a very delicate, juicy, yellow-gold fruit, that typically contains 2 or 3 large brown seeds. The skin is thin and needs to be handled with care, thus making the cleaning process a bit slower. The pay off is big, however, and once you taste a tree-ripened loquat you'll realize it's worth the effort. Plus, everyone can take home a jar of freshly made salsa de loquat just in time for Cinco de Mayo! What's not to love?!

Want to be on a picking crew? Wear long sleeves and sunscreen, and bring pruners, water and gloves. Want to be a kitchenista? Please bring rubber gloves and a non-precious dishtowel. Want to try your hand at both? That's great! We'll all be meeting at 2556 Glen Green Street (midway up the cul-de-sac) at 9am. We can't wait to see you!

If you must drive, please park on Beachwood Drive, as parking is very limited on Glen Green.

Spring Meeting Report

We gathered on Thursday April 21st at 6:30 p.m. at Cheremoya School. Our new Senior Lead Officer, Manny Sanchez introduced himself to the BCNA at this Spring meeting and we are happy to welcome him to our neighborhood. Officer Sanchez gave us the latest crime statistics for our area. He reminded us what we could do to keep crime out of our neighborhood. Do not leave anything in your car; lock all doors and windows, and report any crime to the police so they can keep track and assign patrols accordingly.

Kimberly Dullaghan, resident of Glen Green, reported that their Neighborhood Watch efforts have been quite effective in keeping crime out of their streets for several years. Kimberly has created a "Crime Meeting" on May 1st at the Besant Lodge, at 6:30 p.m. We urge you to attend.

Adam Miller presented the LA City Council District 4 Report. He talked about efforts regarding homelessness. Also, there is new "Sidewalk Ordinance" in effect, specifically returning ownership of sidewalks to property owners; LA City will repair sidewalks; share costs 50/50 with 3 year guarantee and return to do further repairs. Contact Adam at adam.miller@lacity.org

There will be a Town Hall meeting on May 4th at 6:30 p.m at Immaculate Heart High School. This is hosted by LAPD and homelessness and homeless encampments will be among the topics.

Hollywood Neighborhood Council Elections THIS Sunday, May 1st from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Gelson's Market.

BCNA passed a motion to formally oppose the PPD hastily installed on Beachwood. See PDF letter to Councilmember David Ryu

Here's a link to the most recent Los Feliz Ledger article outlining this issue. We have serious questions regarding CD4's account of what transpired leading to the PPD installation. They claim there were FORTY meetings with the public on this. They blame the LAPD and the DOT for its hasty installation. We are going to be asking for some evidence to back up these claims (Stay tuned). Los Feliz Ledger Article

Why not wander into into the Cafe and enjoy a meal and conversation with neighbors? This IS family!

In days gone by, most neighbors would meet spontaneously in the local cafe and visit about all manner of neighborhood issues. It looks like those days are here again! How many times have you found yourself meeting with a friend at the Cafe? Stop in for a cup of coffee in the morning. Enjoy breakfast or lunch before your stroll through the neighborhood.
