Dear Friend and Neighbor, Paul Helmle Passed on Dec 3, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

I know it's a shock to people that such a vivid presence has disappeared from our lives.

Paul was in and out of Kaiser Hospital from late September on, with recurring pneumonia. Radiation treatment fifteen or so years ago had caused long-term damage to his throat muscles, which prevented him from swallowing properly, allowing food and liquid to get into his airway and causing repeated infections. A number of other underlying lung and heart related conditions reduced his ability to recover. Sadly, on December 3rd he died at home at the age of 79.

I miss him terribly but we had forty-six happy years together. He led a very useful and satisfying life and was loved by a multitude of people.

A Different Kind of New Year in Beachwood

Did you feel it?  We usually say that about earthquakes but frankly, since June of 2015 there has been a geologic shift in the attention and care given to Beachwood Canyon and its most famous, icon, The Hollywood Sign.

The BCNA received an e-mail from Councilman David Ryu's office during the Christmas week, telling us that additional officers had been assigned to our area for the holidays and we then gave our obligatory "thank you".

Now that Christmas and New Years celebrations are behind us, we know we give whole-hearted and sincere thanks because, after years of neglect and disinterest from City Hall, the freshest air we have felt has just blown through.

On New Year's Eve, the traffic back-up on Beachwood was palpable. Three traffic officers were screening drivers going up Beachwood and sending away anyone on a tourist excursion and allowing local traffic through. Although at the bottom of the hill, this seemed inconvenient, the greater good was being served. The area leading to Mt. Lee was kept clear for emergency responders in case of fire, or other events. Councilman Ryu has stated many times that his ultimate decisions on how to handle the crowds up here will be made with public safety in mind first and foremost. This valuable exercise continued on New Year's Day!

Happy New Year! Councilman Ryu and staff, thank you for taking our concerns to heart and responding vigorously and attentively. Many of us in the Canyon, are thanking the universe or higher power of our choice for bringing all of you to our community.

Beachwood Cafe

Why not wander into into the Cafe and have a meal and conversation with any one of the many neighbors you will run into? This IS family!

In days gone by, most neighbors would meet spontaneously in the local cafe and visit about all manner of neighborhood issues. We can do it again.

David Ryu's New Website

I'm writing to share some exciting news with you. Today my new City Council website
has officially launched.
My goal is to start a new conversation with you on how we can restore faith and rebuild trust in our local government. I'm committed to meaningful community engagement in the decisions that affect our lives, greater fiscal accountability and a renewed commitment to our neighborhoods.

My website is a great place to learn more about what's going on in our communities and City Hall.

More importantly, it's a place where you can let me know about the issues that concern you and your family the most.

If there is any way I may be of assistance, please contact my field deputy for your areaCatherine Landers.

Sincerely,

David Ryu
