Let's Buy a Mountain!

Friends, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to permanently preserve 17 acres of open space.

The Laurel Canyon Association in coordination with Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife (CLAW) have entered into an agreement to purchase a sizable portion of the mountain above Wonderland School, between Lookout Mountain Avenue and Stanley Hills Drive.

With your help, this very large piece of LA's greenbelt will be forever removed from the threat of development. This land will be maintained as open space by the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority in coordination with CLAW and the Laurel Canyon Land Trust.

People Demand Regulations be Applied to Helicopter Pilots!

The Los Angeles Area Helicopter Noise Coalition has submitted 4 Special Federal Aviation Regulations (SFAR) petitions for FAA consideration to stop the most egregious noise pollution issues associated with helicopter traffic in Los Angeles County. 1) minimum altitude restrictions of 2,000 feet above ground level (AGL), 2) a limit on hovering times, 3) a requirement for media to pool helicopter news coverage, and 4) the creation of a new off-shore helicopter route. The petitions were submitted after three years of voluntary negotiations with the helicopter owners and operators mediated by the FAA resulted only in the creation of a helicopter noise reporting system.

Congressman Adam Schiff, who introduced legislation to give the FAA one year to come up with a voluntary solution or face regulations, released this statement:

"These steps are a clear sign of the frustration that many residents of Los Angeles continue to feel regarding the problem of excessive helicopter noise in Los Angeles. I urge the FAA to redouble its efforts to tackle this problem effectively; in the absence of sufficient progress through voluntary measures, Congress has made it clear that regulation will be necessary."

"The deployment of the helicopter noise complaint system earlier this year should provide a wealth of data about the sources and potential solutions to excessive helicopter noise, and I urge the FAA to put it to good use expeditiously."

"Residents have tried the voluntary approach with the Federal Aviation Administration, the helicopter pilots and the industry to reduce helicopter noise but it has failed. Frustrated residents have filed petitions with the FAA to resolve the helicopter noise issues with regulation."

Visit the LAAHNC web site for more information on this effort.

New Mobile App Allows Quick Reporting of Helicopter Noise Complaints

October 22, 2015

In the Apple and Google mobile app stores for the first time today, HeliTracker will help restore peace in the sky over Southern California. Two local residents developed it out of annoyance by frequent loud, low flying helicopters and out of frustration from the lack of an efficient mechanism to lodge complaints. Now with several taps on a smartphone or other mobile device, residents can easily report all helicopter disturbances.

HeliTracker is designed specifically for LA County residents, who can purchase the mobile app for $0.99. Both iOS and Android versions are available. Roy Meals, co-developer of the app states, "

HeliTracker empowers LA County residents to easily voice concern regarding the aerial blight caused by vastly under-regulated helicopters. We want to improve the quality of life overhead for Angelenos, so we will donate any profit from HeliTracker to TreePeople.org, a nonprofit organization whose commitment is to grow a green and climate-resilient Los Angeles."

To report a disturbance, one opens the app. HeliTracker automatically confirms the user's location, zip code, date, and time. With one tap, the user indicates the type of disturbance (loud, low, hovering, ...) and, with a second tap, sends the report. It takes only several seconds. HeliTracker forwards all complaints daily to the FAA's Automatic Complaint System.

Bob Anderson, President of the Los Angeles Area Helicopter Noise Coalition and a HeliTracker beta tester says,
"HeliTracker is very easy to use and so quick. If you live or work where helicopters are a nuisance, you need this app."
