Councilman Elect, David Ryu Coming to Beachwood Soon!

It's a new day in City Hall! And, for us lucky residents of Council District 4, there is a little more sunshine in our future.

Our new councilman elect, David Ryu hosted a picnic at Crystal Springs in Griffith Park. More than 200 people showed up to greet the councilman and wish him well. The councilman had so many pictures taken and shook so many hands that we weren't sure if the five hours he allotted for the event would be enough.

He used the time between the election and the swearing in ceremony to reach out to homeowners, neighborhood associations, business groups, and civic leaders to get an idea of what is needed as we all go forward together. We think he has the "smarts" to come up with a plan to implement the necessary repairs and improvements in each and every neighborhood. It certainly does feel like a new day to those of us who have had the opportunity to sit down and talk to David Ryu.

We are working with his team to get a date for our BCNA Summer meeting. We want to introduce David Ryu and his staff to Beachwood Canyon since we will be working closely with them to address our issues. It looks like the voters may have made the right choice in May and we congratulate and welcome Councilman Ryu to Beachwood Canyon.

Councilmember David Ryu Sworn In at City Hall - Editorial

It's a new day for Beachwood Canyon. I want to encourage neighbors to seize opportunities to meet with our new City Councilman and be generous in your support. Most of you are well aware of the way things have been for many years so you understand that Councilman David Ryu is sailing relatively uncharted waters.

Councilman Ryu values family and community and is looking forward to spending quality time with members of CD4. But it's early and this next few weeks is going to be spent choosing his entire staff. If you have a recommendation - someone you would love to see as our field deputy, please write your letter to Julia Duncan

Personally, I feel that Tracy James was an excellent deputy for Beachwood Canyon and is keenly aware of the challenges we face and the dynamics of our community. But you may have a suggestion of your very own.

Let's see how we can help the new councilman get his footing. There will be plenty of time to lay out our priorities. When that moment comes, he will be ready to deal with each issue in a new way.

We have much to look forward to and there are far better days ahead for Beachwood Canyon!

Protest at the Mayor's Mansion - LA Animal Services Needs Reorganization and a Leader!

Over 150 people showed up on a hot Sunday morning to try to get through to Mayor Garcetti. In spite of the many reports of mismanagement on the part of his appointed General Manager Brenda Barnette, the Mayor has not only turned his back on the community and ignored their voices, he has gone so far as giving Ms Barnette a raise. She now makes $220,000 with precious little to show for it. The streets in parts of Los Angeles are over run with stray dogs and cats and the hillside community has no Urban Wildlife Specialist to support them. The abuses are far too many to list here but if you would like more information, please contact Paul Darrigo.

Cheremoya's 100th Anniversary

That's right. The school at the bottom of the hill (the landmark that is the gateway to Beachwood Canyon) will turn 100 this year!

The new principal, Steve Salva is starting to plan for the big event and a large part of this effort will be focused on trying to get in touch with former students and teachers. In order to help him, we are publishing class photos from various years. Do you know anyone from this class (1998 - 1999)? Are you an alumni of the school and interested in sharing a story or two? Have you attended Cheremoya School?

If so, e-mail Steve at ses8079@lausd.net.

Maybe you would like to help organize this great event or maybe offer a donation for the celebration.

Please make your check payable to Cheremoya Avenue Elementary School. Make sure to write the following in the memo on your check:  "100th Celebration"  Please mail your generous donation to:

Beachwood Cafe

Why not wander into into the Cafe and have a meal and conversation with any one of the many neighbors you will run into? This IS family!

In days gone by, most neighbors would meet spontaneously in the local cafe and visit about all manner of neighborhood issues. We can do it again.
