Election Day is Upon Us

We know you have questions for the candidates running for council district 4. The local Beachwood forum is planned for February 23 (see below) and will be a chance to hear the candidates answer a few questions. We hope you'll contribute to this event by sending your brief questions to us. See the rules below. There are also other candidate forums to attend and we share them with you in this newsletter.

Tomorrow there will be street closures - read and prepare your journey through Hollywood accordingly.

A beautiful boy cat has been found and is being held by a neighbor pending location of his owners. Failing that, foster opportunities are welcome. Cats in Beachwood are indoors only. See the article below.

Enjoy! Submit your articles via email:

Council District 4 Candidate Forum - hosted by BCNA & HHA
Feb 23 at the Beachwood Cafe 7 p.m.

Residents of Beachwood Canyon with the help of local neighborhood groups would like to invite you to a Council District 4 candidates forum.

Date: Monday, February 23rd,  7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Seating is limited. Please arrive early. Walk or carpool, if possible.

First Come - First Seated - space is limited!

Location: Beachwood Caf, 2695 N. Beachwood Drive LA, CA, 90068  (Thanks for the space, Patti Peck!)

Community members together with the help of the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association and the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association (BCNA & HHA) have organized a forum to bring CD 4 candidates to the neighborhood. This is not a debate but rather a forum to introduce the candidates and have them answer five pre-selected questions from the community...that's YOU!

WE NEED YOUR HELP:

Prior to the event, submit your questions to BCNA and HHA as follows:

Each question must be 25 words or less (LIMIT ONE QUESTION PER PERSON)

Submit questions to:

[email protected] or [email protected]

The DEADLINE to submit your question is: Monday, February 16th, 5 p.m.

From the submitted questions, reps from each organization will select the five questions that best represent all the questions received. At the forum, each question will be asked of each candidate in random order with 2 minutes allotted for the candidate's response. Candidates will not receive advance notice of the selected questions.

Please attend and bring your neighbors and friends!

Note that this is a community event rather than a district wide one. And, although the caf holds plenty, seating will be limited. Walk or carpool if possible and arrive early. First come, first seated!

Thanks to the candidates and thanks to all of you! We look forward to an informative evening!

Street Closure TOMORROW Feb 9th 2 a.m - 11 p.m.

This notice including the traffic plan below is for our upcoming McFarland USA movie premiere on Monday, February 9, 2015, at El Capitan Theatre.

We plan to close the eastbound lanes of Hollywood Blvd. between Highland Avenue and Orange Avenue, beginning at 2:00 a.m. on Monday morning, reopening by 11:59 p.m. on the same day. There will be a brief thirty minute closure of the westbound traffic lanes of Hollywood Blvd. between 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. to accommodate a one song performance by the Latin American pop star Juanes who wrote the signature song of the movie. McFarland USA opens at El Capitan Theatre on February 22, 2015 and I encourage you to see it. It is an inspirational multigenerational and multicultural sports movie based upon a true story set in the small agricultural town of McFarland, California, and stars Kevin Costner.

If you have questions about our closure, you may reach me at the office at 323-468-8268. On the day of the event I am also fully available on my mobile phone 818-731-5442.  This number is shown on the map below.

Sincerely,

Ed Collins

Hollywood Orchard Pick n Kitchen Saturday, Feb 21 8:45 - 2 p.m.

The climate is perfect for neighbors to get together and create another Pick n Kitchen event. Volunteers are lining up to reach out to those in our canyon that have trees abundant with fruit and in need of a slight prune. Want to join together in our Farmer's Circle? We will gather at the very top of Glen Green outside at 8 a.m. on February 21st. Please be part of this exciting canyon-wide event.

Teams of folks will be planning a route to harvest our local fruit. Neighbors that have great producing trees will be expecting neighbors to come to their yard to help them gather their fruit.

Will you be one of those helping gather fruit? Some of the fruit gathered will go directly to local food banks. This is GOOD work!

Come spend a few hours with us picking fruit and making food stuff! You'll have a rewarding community service experience, with a unique blend of Angelenos.

Come find your "Citrus Salvation"!

"Hollywood Orchard . . . where the community grows"

Join us for our classic adventure: The Pick 'n Kitchen! Teams of "Pickers" will go through the canyon picking citrus from participating neighbors' trees. Most of the citrus will be brought to A Place Called Home, a South Los Angeles center for underserved youth. The "Kitchen-istas" and our chefs will lead us on how to make Preserved Lemons.

WE NEED CITRUS TREES TO PICK!

Please email us to grant us permission to pick your trees! Our crews are contacting our base and fanning out across the canyon in search of ripe citrus. Emailing us to let us know you have fruit to share would be most appreciated! Thank you!
WHERE:
Hollywood Orchard Base Camp: 2599 Glen Green cul-de-sac,
just up the street from Beachwood Dr.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Please arrive by 8:45 a.m. to sign in for the event, receive a name tag and enjoy some light refreshments. We will send off the Pickers in small crews at 9:00 a.m. The Kitchen crew will prep the pop-up kitchen. Pickers will return around 11 a.m. and begin separating and preparing the fruit and/or working in the on-site kitchen to learn a new recipe from our fabulous chefs!

Please wear comfortable, old clothes and sturdy shoes as we'll be working throughout the morning. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a bag lunch and a water bottle. Coolers will be available for your bag lunch.

Harvest Tools: If you have pruning sheers, fruit pickers, work gloves, please bring them.

Kitchen Tools:  a paring knife, and/or cutting board (Remember to label your tools!)

TRANSPORTATION & PARKING:

Please walk, ride a bike or carpool to the Glen Green cul-de-sac as parking is very limited. Be sure to check parking signs and please be respectful of our neighbors and where you leave your vehicle.

Thanks for all your great support and we look forward to a liberating Citrus Salvation Pick!!!

Gorgeous Grey Male Cat Lost and found - Great News!

FOUND CAT: Friendly grey male with gorgeous jade eyes. He was on Hollyridge by the Beachwood stairs. He's very sweet and already house broken! He's overweight (15 lbs.) and has a huge scar on his side from living on the streets.

BACKGROUND: After approaching many neighbors, this cat appeared near Yvonne's home (Lambert and Hollyridge) and Yvonne took action to get the cat into her home. Thanks for that work, Yvonne!

ACTION/OUTCOME: Yvonne placed signs all over the neighborhood and finally heard from the owners. Cat and owners are now united!!!

Neighbors, if you see a cat that is clearly lost and needs shelter from coyotes, please take the cat in and follow Yvonne's example. Put out signs and reach out to [email protected] so that the word is spread far and wide.
