Marty Paich and Mel Torme collaborated on an album in 1956 that utilized a Dek-tette instrumentation modeled after the birth of the cool. The Dek-tette sound was so successful that Marty and the Dek-tette were in high demand and used by a number of vocalists ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Sammy Davis Jr. He also used a Dek-tette type instrumentation for the classic Art Pepper + Eleven sessions in 1959. While this concert is primarily instrumental, I'll be performing "They All Laughed" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It."

Bobby Troup was a major purveyor of West coast Cool. As a songwriter he penned "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66," "Girl Talk," "Baby, Baby, All the Time," and "Daddy" among many others. As a producer he was responsible for the smash hit recording "Cry Me a River," by his wife, Julie London. While he acted in a number of films, from playing Tommy Dorsey in The Gene Krupa Story to a cameo in M*A*S*H, he is best remembered for his role in the1970's TV series "Emergency!," co-starring with wife London. I'll be joining forces with two of the top jazz vocalists around as we pay tribute to Bobby Troup.

And if you are a West Coast Cool affectionado, you'll want to spend the entire weekend listening to this uniquely California jazz. Just click on the image to the right and it will take you directly to the L. A. Jazz Institute's webpage where you can get more information and purchase tickets to any or all the great shows lined up for the festival. You can even download the full 16-page brochure (designed by yours truly).

Silent Movie Fundraiser at Basant Lodge
Nov 16 at 6 p.m.

Stop the Millennium is putting on a great event at our local Basant Lodge - Here's their message:

We were thrilled to learn that the Besant Lodge on Beachwood Canyon was the first Silent Movie Club in
Southern California. We have teamed up with Cliff Retallick for one great evening in our historic neighborhood.

"The Mark of Zorro (1920) tells the story of Don Diego Vega (Douglas Fairbanks), the outwardly foppish son of a wealthy ranchero Don Alejandro in the old Spanish California of the early 19th century. Seeing the mistreatment of the peons by rich landowners and the oppressive colonial government, Don Diego, who is not as effete as he pretends, has taken the identity of the masked Robin Hood-like rogue Seņor Zorro ("Mr. Fox"), champion of the people, who appears out of nowhere to protect them from the corrupt administration of Governor Alvarado, his henchman the villainous Captain Juan Ramon and the brutish Sergeant Pedro Gonzales."

Come see "The Mark of Zorro," and enjoy live music complete with Cliff Retallick on Piano, Jazmine Ramay and Zaidee Lutetia on Vocals. You'll be hearing them singing songs from the '20s era. And of course, there will be movie-going refreshments.

All this for a $50 donation! If you haven't received your invitation, or know someone who would
like one, please contact us at STMevents2014@gmail.com. If you must drive, park in the Beachwood Market parking lot, courtesy of Alex Pappalexis. Shuttle rides from and back to the Village will be provided by the Reichenbach family.

Dancing - Twisted Sifter

Got two minutes? Watch 11-year-old Adi Malcolm perform an amazing dance routine to "Higher" by Mark Rosas. For those curious, the dance technique in the video is often referred to as animation with elements of gliding, floating, puppet, strobing, waving and robot (all of which are open to interpretation).

Ultimately, it's just a talented person grooving to the beat :)

Adi is self-taught and has never taken a dance class. She learned from watching YouTube videos and is an avid motocross racer. Her first video is currently going viral. Keep up the great work Adi!
