Dear Beachwood Family

There's so much going on in our neighborhood but this is mostly good news just for you! Enjoy it, and know that your own good news matters and we want to highlight it right here for all to see. Oh, and check the Concert at the Besant Sacred Cinema on the 25th (see below). It's for pedestrian's only and well worth the shoe leather.

Ferndell Watering Event THIS Saturday, October 11 at 9 a.m.

This next weekend, we need help watering plants at the Fern Canyon area on the east side of park. The rangers will have a water truck, and we need to hand carry water in buckets a short distance. The restoration work was done in the spring and the drought-adapted plants are doing well, but need a little help during this hot weather period.

Saturday, October 11, 9:00 a.m. Meet at the Merry-Go-Round parking lot, off of Crystal Springs Drive. Please RSVP so we have an idea of attendance. Hope to have enough help to finish in 1 1/2 hours.

We will have some significant volunteer projects this fall involving native plantings in disturbed areas of the park. We hope you'll be able to pitch in.

Thank you,

Laura Howe, Service Director, Friends of Griffith Park

Westshire Clean Up Day - Saturday, October 11 at 8 a.m.

It's been way too hot for sweeping and cleaning but Westshire residents are waking up bright and early this Saturday and sweeping their sidewalks, gutters and driveways. In the spirit of community improvement, neighbors will also be sweeping the frontage of houses whose residents are out of town or not able to do this work.

Note to Westshire Curvite Cleaning Crew: Please wear a hat, keep a bottle of water with you, use your broom, and don't forget to have a big plastic bag or two.

If your block is planning a clean up event, please let us know so we can share and all can be inspired.

Beachwood Cafe
Why not wander into into the Cafe and have a meal and conversation with any one of the many neighbors you will run into? This IS family!

In days gone by, most neighbors would meet spontaneously in the local cafe and visit about all manner of neighborhood issues. We can do it again.

105 Year-Old Movie Clip

This film from 1906 in downtown San Francisco was made 4 days before the great earthquake destroyed the city at 5:12 AM on April 18th, 1906. It is filmed from the front of a cable car, heading east toward the ferry terminal building, which is the tower in the background (which survived the quake and still stands today). Filmed by the Miles Brothers, 14 April, 1906
