SAVE Heritage Sycamore Tree Saturday, Sept 13!

Please join Friends of Griffith Park at the heritage Sycamore Tree in the Crystal Springs picnic area:

Saturday September 13th at 10:00 to 11 am

We will pay respect to this tree, which may be as old as 200 years. We want to save the tree, which the City may remove to build ball fields.

Friends of Griffith Park and the Griffith J.Griffith Charitable Trust will make an important announcement regarding the effort to save the Crystal Springs Picnic Area and preserve the heritage trees.

Friends of Griffith Park will provide water and soft drinks. Please bring your enthusiasm. Help us spread the word. The more the merrier. All kids welcome!

"God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools." - John Muir

Reminder: BCNA/HHA Host Fire Safety Meeting

September 15, 2014 at 7 p.m.

At the Beachwood Cafe

Battalion 5 Chiefs will be sharing their suggestions for how neighbors in our hillside community can best prepare for and react to a fire. Please attend this very important meeting.

Thank You CD4 Cadets!

Last Saturday (August 30), community leaders in the Beachwood Canyon/Lake Hollywood area gathered to show their appreciation to CD4 staffers, Oleksiy Mamyshev, Abel Luis Reyes, and Diego Rivera for their fine work. They provided great service to the residents of the Beachwood Canyon and Lake Hollywood, as well as visitors to Griffith Park by accumulating valuable data and assisting in traffic safety. Councilmember LaBonge  thanked would them for their dedicated work ethic that contributed greatly to the service provided daily in our area.

Thanks to Tracy James for coordinating their presence here, assisting them and thanks to the Lake Hollywood HOA, Hollywoodland HOA, and Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association leaders who brought water to cadets and helped them take breaks when needed. This effort was a true show of synergy all the way across the board. We hope that they will be sticking around at the Scenic View area while our summer continues to draw a lot of visitors.

Send your thank you notes to Tom.Labonge@lacity.org and Tracy.James@lacity.org.

What Happened to Target?

If you're like many in this area who were looking forward to a new Target at Sunset and St. Andrews, you're probably wondering what happened to the plan? Why has the project stopped?

Here's a brief outline:

The Target store design was originally in conformance with the Vermont-Western Specific Plan and the Vermont-Western Station Neighborhood Area Plan (SNAP). It had a 2-level subterranean garage and a ground level store. Councilman at the time, Eric Garcetti pressured Target into changing their store into a 2-level above ground parking structure and a third floor store. This was part of Garcetti's scheme to increase the height of projects in the area. He needed the Target height to be higher so it could be used as a precedent for subsequent projects in the area. The new design required variances from the specific plan and SNAP. The city granted the variances. The lawsuit was about the falsehood of the findings necessary to justify granting the variances. The judge found that ALL of the findings were false. Had Target not listened to Garcetti, their project would already be complete and open for business. The fault for the Target store not being open goes directly to Eric Garcetti.

By contrast, the Marshall's store at Hollywood and Western is on schedule to open in November because it does conform to the specific plan and SNAP.

Beachwood Cafe
Why not wander into into the Cafe and have a meal and conversation with any one of the many neighbors you will run into? This IS family!

In days gone by, most neighbors would meet spontaneously in the local cafe and visit about all manner of neighborhood issues. We can do it again.
