It's the LAW!

Feeding coyotes is against the law and does not cause them to be less hungry for your small pets.

Put the Bee Back in Beachwood!

Over the last three years, more than one in three honeybee colonies collapsed nationwide, a phenomenon now called Colony Collapse Disorder or CCD.

According to the USDA, about one-third of our food is thanks to the work of bees, making CCD one of the broadest environmental and food security challenges of our time. And while there is no one smoking gun causing CCD, scientists now widely agree that it is a result of a combination of factors, made manifest by industrial beekeeping, a practice which involves trucking thousands of hives great distances to pollinate crops, exposing bees to countless pesticides, interfering with the species natural defenses by treating them with miticides and antibiotics, and feeding them high fructose corn syrup. This deadly cocktail has made bees incredibly vulnerable and on the brink of collapse. That is, only if we fail to act, if we fail to recognize this disaster in the making and do not take strong action to counter the slow march to extinction. See the Vanishing Bees website:  Vanishing Bees

Atlanta, New York, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Spokane, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver and most recently Santa Monica and Redondo Beach have all taken decisive action and legalized urban beekeeping.

Los Angeles currently outlaws beekeeping in residential areas, and the city's policy is to exterminate all feral honey bees. With worldwide bee populations threatened with Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and urban beekeeping more popular than ever, this policy needs to change. We believe it to be a necessary and just measure requiring immediate action.

Many Neighborhood Councils within Los Angeles (Mar Vista, Del Rey, Greater Griffith Park, South Robertson, Silver Lake, Hollywood United, Atwater Village, West Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Lake Balboa,  Chatsworth, Palms...) have already voted in favor of supporting an urban beekeeping program in residentially zoned districts. Help us inspire the City Planning Department to initiate an ordinance that would allow Los Angeles residents to raise their own honeybees, a practice that helps boost struggling honeybee populations and ensures local food security.

Please sign our petition to let the Los Angeles City Council know that this is an important issue that they should move on as soon as possible!

Protect Mountain Lions

The Santa Monica Mountains Fund is dedicated to advancing research and conservation of the mountain lions that call the park home. Unfortunately, their future in the park is uncertain and the Fund is actively working with park biologists and researchers to learn what is needed protect these magnificent animals. Clear evidence shows that when large predators are lost, the balance of life in an ecosystem is severely disrupted and the diversity of other plants and animals begins an accelerated decline.

Your donation directly supports the work being undertaken to protect mountain lions. This research has already influenced state and local policy decisions on issues such as construction of highway crossings and regulation of certain rat poisons.Additional funding is needed to continue this project. Some examples of how your donation will be used include:

  • Radio-collars: $2,500 - 5,000.00 per collar
  • Tracking vehicle: $3000.00 per year
  • Anticoagulant Testing: $120.00 per mountain lion capture
  • Health diagnostics: $40.00 per test
  • Disease surveys: $50.00 per test

KPCC - 20 Things to do Before the Next Earthquake

Friday's 5.1-magnitude earthquake, and the smaller one in Encino last week, served as a reminder that we live in a seismically active region. Here are 20 suggestions from the U.S. Geological Survey on how to prepare for the next quake.

  • Hang plants in lightweight pots with closed hooks.
  • Install strong latches on kitchen cabinets.
  • Use flexible connections where gas lines meet appliances.
  • Secure valuable electronics items such as computers and televisions.
  • Keep breakables in low or secure cabinets with latches.
  • Hang mirrors and pictures on closed hooks.
  • Keep heavy, unstable objects away from doors and exit routes.
  • Place bed away from windows or items that may fall.
  • Secure knick knacks and other small valuables with museum putty.
  • Brace overhead light fixtures.
  • Place only light weight or soft items over bed.
  • Secure top-heavy furniture to wall studs.
  • Secure water heater with metal straps attached to wall studs.
  • Store an ABC-type fire extinguisher in easily accessible location.
  • Keep several flashlights in easily accessible places around the house.
  • Keep a wrench or turn-off tool in water proof wrap near gas meter.
  • Know the location of your main fuse box or circuit breaker.
  • Keep slippers and gloves next to beds.
  • Keep an emergency backpack with copies of important documents near the door to grab and go.
  • Store emergency food and water supplies in a dry, accessible area. Include a first aid kit, extra cash, portable radio, extra batteries, medications and other necessary supplies - away from your structure.

Feel Good Moment

Young cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, known as 2CELLOS, achieved sensational success by taking the cello to a new level and breaking the boundaries between different genres of music.

Do yourself a favor and use your ear buds with the volume full so you will fully experience this unique expression! Their performance of Benedictus is deep and stirring.

Here's a little something from 2Cellos that departs a bit and will illustrate their full range:
